HTC working on smartwatch with camera for next year, new tablet too maybe
If you thought that Samsung and Sony were the only companies that have recently found a love for smartwatches, well, you were wrong. Apparently HTC wants in on this game too, and it’s working on just such a device.
The Taiwanese company has been going through increasingly rough seas over the past few months, with each quarter’s results worse than the one before it. Although it’s constantly reassured investors and customers that it’s on the right track, HTC still hasn’t managed to turn itself back into the leading Android vendor it once was. So now, perhaps understandably, it’s thinking about entering new product categories, in the hope that such a move would help its bottom line. That remains to be seen, of course.
An HTC smartwatch wouldn’t be just a gimmick, it turns out. That’s what HTC CEO Peter Chou thinks the competition’s offerings currently are (and Samsung seems to agree). The HTC smartwatch will sport a camera and is expected to launch in the second half of 2014. So you shouldn’t start counting your cash just yet.
But wait, there’s more. HTC may also be thinking about releasing a new tablet sometime in the future. The company hasn’t been successful in that space in the past, but a possible new offering will have to be “something nice and disruptive”, says HTC Chairwoman Cher Wang.
