The Avoca 7 from Carphone Warehouse is a £49 Android Jelly Bean tablet
Not wanting to be outdone by Tesco, Carphone Warehouse now offers an extremely cheap Android tablet of its own. The Avoca 7 is now actually a lot more affordable than Tesco’s offering, but, as you may imagine, comes with a lot of compromises.
Whereas the Tesco Hudl sports rather decent specs, the Avoca is incredibly low-end. It comes with a 7-inch 800×480 touchscreen, a 1 GHz single-core processor, 512 MB of RAM, 8 GB of internal storage space, microSD card support, Wi-Fi connectivity, and a 3,000 mAh battery. It runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. Its dimensions are 192x117x10.7 mm, and it weighs 350 grams.
The Avoca 7 can be yours for just £49, but you’d be crazy to buy one. First off, the paltry amount of RAM will ensure your experience will be anything but smooth, and the screen’s resolution is a sick joke from the past. In today’s world when 5″ smartphones routinely come with 1,920×1,080, going for a tablet with 800×480 means you’ll have a new hobby: counting pixels while waiting for the Avoca to do anything, since that single-core CPU will struggle with, well, anything you throw at it.
So don’t. Just don’t. We’re all for cheap smart mobile devices, but this is taking things too far. If you really want a tablet, save up for something that’s at least decent.
