6.1″ Huawei Ascend Mate 2 smiles for the camera, has specs leaked

Huawei has slowly (but steadily) risen to the No.3 smartphone maker spot worldwide, and it shows no signs of wanting to ever leave the Top 3. To achieve such a feat in a wildly competitive market it will obviously need to sell a lot of devices. To do that, they’ll need to be good. Or cheap. Or interesting in some unique way. Or, preferably, all of the above.

The original Ascend Mate was thought to be gigantic with its 6.1-inch screen when it was announced early this year, but now that display size doesn’t feel that extreme anymore thanks to competitors such as the Sony Xperia Z Ultra. The Ascend Mate is about to get a successor, and it will keep the screen size intact.

Since the original Ascend Mate was unveiled during CES in January, and since we’re not that far away from January 2014 right now when we find out about the Mate 2, we’re going to assume that it too will make its debut at the Las Vegas show.

What you see above are obviously images depicting the Ascend Mate 2 in all its glory. Thankfully some specs have been leaked alongside these. Huawei’s next phablet should sport a 1.6 GHz quad-core processor, which may be the same HiSilicon Kirin 910 with Mali-450 graphics as the one used in the upcoming Ascend P6S, according to Huawei News. This makes sense since the Chinese company likes to use the same chipset in as many of its handsets as possible (see the situation with the K3V2 over the past couple of years).

Aside from the CPU, the resolution could (and really should) get a bump from the rather disappointing 720p HD of this year’s model to the now-standard for the high-end 1080p Full HD. Furthermore, we’ll find 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage inside the new Ascend Mate 2. Unfortunately though, it looks like the version of Android at the helm will be 4.2.2 Jelly Bean which is now a year old. On top of this we’ll see Huawei’s very own Emotion UI, here in the 2.0 iteration, which will hopefully be used to disguise the old Android version underneath.

Right now these are all the details we have, but they’re plentiful for a first leak. We’re expecting more and more things about the Huawei Ascend Mate 2 to become clear over the next few weeks. If it will in fact be announced in January, then we’ll probably see it in stores a month or two later.
