Android 4.4 KitKat update for Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini, Ace 3 and others is now “under investigation”
Some of Samsung’s mid to low-end Android smartphones might be officially updated to Android 4.4 KitKat – thanks to the fact that Google’s newest OS can work perfectly even on low-cost devices.
SamMobile has received a list of handsets for which the possibility of a KitKat update is “under investigation.” The list includes the following phones:
- Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini (this will almost surely get KitKat, no matter what),
- Samsung Galaxy S III Mini
- Samsung Galaxy S Advance
- Samsung Galaxy Ace 3
- Samsung Galaxy Ace 2
- Samsung Galaxy Core
- Samsung Galaxy Fame
- Samsung Galaxy Fresh
All these are newer than 18 months, that’s why Samsung is considering updating them. Smartphones introduced more than 18 months ago – like the Galaxy Nexus or Galaxy S II – will sadly not get Android 4.4 KitKat (despite the fact that their hardware theoretically supports it).
As for Samsung’s current flagship smartphones (Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3), these might get KitKat as soon as January. The S4 Google Play Edition has already received its official update, so it’s clear that Samsung doesn’t want to keep users waiting for too long. Last year’s Samsung flagships – the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note 2 – could be updated shortly after the S4 and Note 3, in March or April.
