Philips Xenium W9588 midrange Android flip phone now available in China for a whopping $823

Philips just launched the Xenium W9588 flip phone in China, and it’s anything but cheap. This isn’t a big surprise, though, for all of the recently released clamshells in Asia are extremely overpriced. This is now like a niche of its own – clamshell smartphones with ludicrous prices and gold accents or styling. Someone must be buying them, for otherwise we wouldn’t see so many options.

The Philips W9588 has run of the mill specs for this day and age, coming with a pair of 3.5-inch 854×480 touchscreens, a 1.2 GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6589 processor, 1 GB of RAM, 4 GB of internal storage, microSD card support, an 8 MP camera, and a 2,400 mAh battery. It runs Android, but which version is unclear.

The price is all that matters here, we assume. And it’s a hefty 4,999 yuan, which translates into approximately $823 or €599. Would you pay that much for a lower-midrange flip phone? If the answer to that is Yes, then, well, you’re the reason this niche is slowly growing.

Whereas Samsung (another lover of expensive flip phones) does normally produce high price devices, Philips is known mostly for its affordable wares. So whether the company will be able to sell the W9588 well or not remains to be seen.
