Verizon Motorola Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx, and Droid Mini are now getting Android 4.4 KitKat

Following in the footsteps of the Moto X, the Droid Ultra / Droid Maxx / Droid Mini trio are now in the process of receiving the update to Android 4.4 KitKat, the absolute latest version of Google’s mobile operating system. This is not surprising anymore, obviously. After Motorola and Verizon made many jaws drop in the mobile world when they released the KitKat update for the Moto X before even the Nexus 4 got it, this now seems business as usual for these two companies. Verizon still has a bad update track record, but that doesn’t apply to Motorola devices anymore.

The update is rolling out in stages, and it’s an over-the-air affair. What this means is that your phone will notify you when it’s ready to download and install, and you go from there. Though keep in mind that it might take a few days (or more) for it to reach your particular device.

Among the things included in the update are the new full-screen “immersive mode”, support for color emoji, better closed captioning, stronger security, smarter power use, new capabilities for app development, the Hangouts messaging app preinstalled, better image quality for the camera alongside ‘touch to focus’, a new version of the Droid Zap app, Fitbit support, and updates for the following apps: Verizon Mobile Security, Verizon Tones, Amazon Kindle, Audible, QuickOffice, Motorola Assist, Google Photos, NFL Mobile, and SSO Client.

The full details are available from Verizon in this PDF, while complete update instructions lie in this PDF.
