Acer announces the affordable 5″ Liquid Z5 smartphone alongside new Iconia A1 and B1 tablets
CES is only a few days away, and already some companies have started sending out press releases announcing what they’ll showcase at the well known trade show. Take Acer, for example. It’s outed one new smartphone and two new tablets so far.
The handset is the Liquid Z5, and it comes with a 5-inch 480×854 touchscreen, a 5 MP BSI rear camera, a VGA front camera, a 1.3 GHz dual-core MediaTek MT6572 processor, 512 MB of RAM, 4 GB of internal storage, HSPA, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, dual-SIM support, and an FM radio. It runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.
It will be available in France, Benelux, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Ukraine, and the UK starting in mid-January, priced at €169. That makes it cheaper than the Moto G (current king of budget Android devices), but it’s also lower-end, with a smaller resolution despite a bigger screen, and half the RAM of Motorola’s offering. The pixel density alone should make you stay away from this handset unless you’re having eyesight problems anyway. And 512 MB of RAM might be fine for Android 4.4 KitKat, but it’s cutting it really close for earlier versions. Speaking of which, you shouldn’t expect any software updates from Acer (unlike Motorola).
So yes, the 16 GB Moto G may be €30 more, but it’s worth the effort – if you can buy it in your country, don’t hesitate. At least not on the account of the Acer Liquid Z5.
Next up, we have refreshed versions of two of Acer’s Android-powered tablets. The Iconia A1-830 (seen above) comes with a 7.9-inch 1,024×768 IPS touchscreen, a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom Z2560 processor, 1 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage, microSD expansion, and it runs Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean. It should manage seven hours of battery life, which is not bad considering it’s going to be priced at $180.
The Acer Iconia B1-720 (pictured above) has a 7-inch touchscreen, a 1.3 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM, 16 GB of storage, and five hours of battery life. All this for the incredibly low price of $130. The B1 will be out in the US later this month.
