Moto X officially coming to Europe next month, it won’t be cheap though

It’s January 14 alright, and indeed the Moto X is coming to Europe. That’s what we thought when Motorola sent out invites for the event it held today in London, and that’s what’s actually happening – around six months after it was first introduced in America.

It’s not all good news, though. While the Moto X is currently being sold unlocked in the US of A for $399, in Europe it will be more expensive. We’ve gotten used to electronics costing the same amount in euro as they do in US dollars (although that still makes them more expensive because of the exchange rates), but Motorola is taking its flagship smartphone even further.

To buy a Moto X, you won’t need to shell out €399 as you might have expected, but €429. Obviously, you’ll get it SIM-free and unlocked for that price, but spec-wise this is still nothing more than a midranger, and it’s going to be interesting to see whether enough people deem it worthy of that price. In the UK, the situation will be even worse, as the Moto X will be priced at £380, which amounts to €457 at the current exchange rate.

The handset will be out on February 1 in France, Germany, and the UK, through a variety of well known retailers. Right now it’s unclear if it will make it to other countries at some point in the future. It also seems that the MotoMaker customization options for the Moto X, so popular in the United States, are not going to be available in Europe, at least not at first. Things can always change, though.

In the UK, you’ll be able to grab a Moto X with a two-year contract from an operator via Phones 4u, Carphone Warehouse, and O2. To get the handset for free, you’ll need to choose a plan that costs at least £25 per month. The white version of the Moto X will be exclusive to Phones 4u in the UK for three months.

The specs of the device haven’t changed in the course of it crossing the Atlantic Ocean. It still comes with the same 4.7-inch 720p HD AMOLED touchscreen, 10 MP rear camera with LED flash, 2 MP front camera, 1.7 GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor (MSM8960Pro), 100 Mbps 4G LTE, 42 Mbps HSPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, NFC, and a 2,200 mAh battery. It runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat. Its dimensions are 129.3×65.3×10.4 mm, and it weighs 130 grams.
