Samsung Galaxy S5 may sport 21 MP camera, test shot reveals
The Samsung Galaxy S5 has long been rumored to come with a 16 MP rear camera, but that may not necessarily be the case. Today an image surfaced that could have been taken with a Galaxy S5 variant (specifically the one meant for Verizon), and it paints a different picture.
The image itself is useless, because it appears that the phone used to take it had been laying down on its back on top of something, or maybe it was even pressed onto one’s hand (see for yourself below). But it’s the accompanying EXIF data that’s of interest.
Through it we find out that it’s the Samsung SM-G900V that took the picture, which according to SamMobile is the Galaxy S5 destined for Verizon. Furthermore, the photo’s original resolution is 5,312×2,988. That amounts to around 16 MP, so you’d say the past rumors have been correct.
But wait. That photo has 16:9 aspect ratio, though photo sensors in phones come with 4:3 aspect ratio. Thus the highest resolution 16:9 shot you can take is actually lower-res than the absolute highest-res photo you can shoot. For a 16:9 shot like this one, the full width of the sensor is used, but not its full height.
If we calculate what a 4:3 sensor’s resolution would have to be in order to output a 16:9 photo with 5,312×2,988 resolution, we arrive at around 21.2 MP. That would be a tad more than even Sony’s current highest-res sensor, the 20.7 MP one employed in the Xperia Z1 and the Xperia Z1 Compact.
This wouldn’t be surprising, considering that Samsung will may not manage to get optical image stabilization (OIS) into the Galaxy S5’s camera, because of issues producing as many OIS modules as the company would need for such a best selling device. So going for resolution instead to grab headlines would make sense, especially since the Korean company has always enjoyed outfitting its flagships’ cameras with more and more megapixels.
On the other hand, EXIF data can easily be faked, so take all of this with a healthy dose of salt. We’ll let you know when (or if) we find out more. With the Galaxy S5’s launch event quickly approaching, expect to be bombarded with even more leaks surrounding it in the near future.
