LG G3 could be waterproof and dustproof, 2,560×1,440 screen rumored again
Now that the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the Sony Xperia Z2 are official, and the new HTC One is due to be unveiled very soon, the focus of leaks in the mobile world seems to have turned onto the LG G3. This will obviously be the successor to the G2 from last year and LG’s flagship device for 2014. It will come later in the year, but has been reported to actually launch sooner than its predecessor, so that it can properly compete with the aforementioned handsets from other manufacturers.
First up in LG G3 related news we have the tidbit that it too may be waterproof and dustproof, just like countless past Sony flagships as well as the recently announced Samsung Galaxy S5. This comes from ET News. If this is becoming a trend at the high-end of the smartphone space, we’re all for it, though hopefully LG will manage to make the G3 withstand the elements without negatively affecting its bezels (as has happened with Samsung’s Galaxy S5).
Next up, @evleaks brings us news that an LG D850 is headed to AT&T. While he doesn’t explicitly say it, this could very well be the G3’s model number, seeing as how the G2 was D800, the Nexus 5 was D820, and the G Pro 2 is the D830. If this is indeed the G3 we’re talking about here, it might come with 2,560×1,440 screen resolution, also known as QHD or 2K. This has so far only been confirmed for two devices, the Vivo Xplay 3S and the Oppo Find 7. The Samsung Galaxy S5 was long rumored to have a screen with this resolution, but ultimately that had to make do with ‘just’ a 1080p Full HD panel.
The information above comes via Phone Arena by way of a tipster who sent in a few details about a phone codenamed B2 which will bear the model numbers D851 and VS985. The latter of those describes Verizon’s version of the device, while the former is so close to D850 that it has to be just a minor variation of the same thing. And so, if the D850 is the G3, then it stands to reason that the D851 is also the G3 (perhaps a version for a specific carrier or for a specific part of the world).
The D851 (and, hence, the G3) will come with a 13 MP rear camera too, and its screen size could be 5.5 inches. That would explain why the G Pro 2 grew its screen size to 5.9 inches, whereas its predecessor (LG’s first phablet, the Optimus G Pro) had a 5.5-inch panel. Obviously, if the main flagship will have a 5.5″ screen, then the phablet needs to be even bigger.
But wait, there’s more! LG may also be working on a G Pro 2 Lite (following a trend from last year, when it unleashed the G Pro Lite), and this may have the codename B2 Lite and the model numbers D631 and VS880 for Verizon.
