Pantech Vega Iron 2 may be the first smartphone to sport Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 CPU, arrives in May

Pantech is South Korea’s third smartphone maker, and the company clearly gets a lot less press than Samsung and LG. But that’s its own doing mainly, especially outside of its home market, since you can’t actually buy Pantech wares in most of the world. That’s a pity, though, for the company has released some truly interesting handsets over the past few years. And it’s bound to do so again very soon.

The first and only time we’ve so far heard about the upcoming Pantech Vega Iron 2, it was said to arrive in Korea in April. Apparently the release date has since slipped to May, but the longer wait may well be worth it. See, a new leak claims the Vega Iron 2 will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor. If so, this would certainly be one of the first smartphones to rock that particular chipset, if not the first.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 and Sony Xperia Z2 both use the Snapdragon 801, and the All New HTC One is probably going to go for that model too. This has been thought to have happened because Qualcomm only expects the 805 to be in shipping devices in May, whereas Samsung, Sony, and HTC all want to have their new flagships in stores in early or mid-April. But Pantech seems happy to wait a bit more if that means it will get dibs on the highest-end chipset Qualcomm has made so far.

The Snapdragon 805 CPU inside the Pantech Vega Iron 2 will be clocked at 2.5 GHz, and as you may know it’s a quad-core part. Aside from the processor, the Vega Iron 2 also got a full list of rumored specs. It’s said to come with a 5.5-inch 1080p Full HD touchscreen, a 13 MP rear camera, a 3 MP front camera, 2 GB of RAM, 32 GB or 64 GB of internal storage, LTE-A support, USB 3.0, all the usual connectivity options, and a 2,800 mAh battery.

It will run Android, but which exact version is still a mystery. We’re assuming it will be KitKat, though. There will be a version of the Vega Iron 2 for each of the three Korean carriers, alongside another unbranded variant.

Past rumors about it said the Vega Iron 2 will come with an all-metal outer casing just like its predecessor, the original Vega Iron from last year.
