Samsung Galaxy S4 Black Edition brings its faux leather back to the UK, costs £499.89

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Black Edition was announced in January, and last month we found out that it would be headed to the UK. It has now arrived, but it’s not as cheap as you may have expected.

Given that this is nothing but a ‘vanilla’ Galaxy S4 with a black paint job and a back cover that sports the faux leather look introduced by the Galaxy Note 3, you’d think it would be reasonably priced – especially given that the Galaxy S5 will be out in the UK on April 11, and that’s essentially this device’s successor. But no. You’d be wrong.

The Galaxy S4 Black Edition is exclusive to Phones 4u, and if you want to get one SIM-free and unlocked you’ll need to pay no less than £499.89 for the privilege. Sure, that’s likely less than what the Galaxy S5 will be offered for, but the point is that the difference probably won’t be significant enough to make this one a recommendable buy.

If Pay as you go is more your thing, then you’ll save £10 on the price of the device, but you’ll need to pay for a mandatory top-up as well. If you’d like to get the Galaxy S4 Black Edition with a 24-month contract, the cheapest one that nets you the handset for free costs £29 per month. This option is at Vodafone and offers 300 minutes, unlimited texts, and 250 MB of data each month.
