Sony Xperia SP won’t be updated to Android 4.4 KitKat
If you own a Sony Xperia SP and were hopeful that it would ever get officially updated to Android 4.4 KitKat, here’s some bad news for you. According to a Sony rep, that simply won’t happen.
This comes despite Sony still claiming, on the SP’s product page, that it’s evaluating the possibility of an update to the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system. But apparently the company has already decided that the just one year old Xperia SP would end its life on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, the update to which started rolling out in February.
Obviously until Sony modifies the support page for the Xperia SP there’s still some very slim hope for owners of this device. But over in France at the FrAndroid forums, Sony has a team of reps ready to answer questions from owners of its wares. And it was one of those guys that said Android 4.4 KitKat for the SP isn’t going to happen. So this seems pretty official indeed.
If it turns out to be true, it will be a real shame, especially as Sony can’t even use every manufacturer’s favorite excuse in such cases – that the handset in question is old. The Xperia SP isn’t, and its hardware is more than capable of running KitKat, especially since that particular version of the OS is optimized to work well on even lower-end innards.
