Sony Xperia Z2 finally released in Europe, could be coming to Verizon too after all
Sony hasn’t managed to keep up with Samsung and HTC in terms of flagship smartphone launches. While the Galaxy S5, Xperia Z2, and One M8 were all announced in the same period, Samsung and HTC have already had their contenders in stores for weeks.
Yet only now has Sony finally made its newest top of the line offering available throughout Europe. Better late than never, right? That said, it’s pretty clear that the Galaxy S5 and One M8 were able to snag a few sales from Sony’s device. If only the Japanese company would have been faster at this whole launch thing…
Anyway, the Xperia Z2 is now out in the UK, where it can be found at carriers as well as third party retailers such as Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4u. SIM-free, you can get it for £539.95 from Phones 4u.
The Xperia Z2 can also be bought from Sony’s online stores in other European countries, such as Germany, France, Italy, Poland, and Sweden. Not all variations are in stock everywhere, but that’s to be expected this close to the launch.
Pricing differs according to country. For example, the Xperia Z2 is cheapest in Sweden and Poland, where it’s priced at SEK 5,995 and PLN 2,799, respectively. Both of those sums amount to approximately €670. Next up, you can find it in Germany for €679, and France and Italy for €699. Hopefully prices will drop at third-party retailers in a few weeks or so.
In the US, the Sony Xperia Z2 is expected to become available directly from Sony’s online store, in SIM-free and unlocked form, sometime this summer. The company hasn’t officially announced any plans to bring its latest flagship to any carrier’s roster, but a slip-up with one of its social media accounts may indicate that there may be a Verizon version in the works.
Sony’s Google+ account posted the image you can see above, which was since removed. It clearly shows a Verizon-branded Xperia Z2, which either means that it’s coming in the future, or that something like this was being worked on but got cancelled for whatever reason (blame Verizon).
It’s unclear what the truth really is, since, in a statement on the matter, Sony only reiterated its plans to sell the Xperia Z2 unlocked in the US, not explicitly saying that there will never be a Verizon variation of the smartphone.
So there may be a slim chance this is happening, but until we get more information, we wouldn’t celebrate. Stay tuned.
