Not that we were really egging on them or anything, but Acer has reaffirmed its plans to introduce its own-brand smartphones by the first quarter of 2009. True, there may be a worldwide economic crisis, but Acer is calm and optimistic about its growth for next year.

The company is currently working on its upcoming smartphones with the help of Taiwan’s E-Ten Information Systems, which it acquired earlier this year. And while Acer chairman JT Wang recently spoke about the company’s smartphone launch, saying it might not happen until the second half of next year, this was all apparently part of a big confusion.

Confirming information on our earlier reports, DigiTimes is saying that Acer will indeed launch its first smartphones in 2009. No details were provided regarding which regions the launch will happen in first, but Western Europe and Russia seem most likely.

It’s official. Acer is going to give the smartphone business another shot at the next chance it gets. And when might that be? The company seems to think starting fresh in a brand new year is best, so they’re aiming for Q1 2009. That’s according to Acer’s senior corporate vice president and president of IT product business group Jim Wong.

Wong also noted that initial shipments of Acer smartphones will begin in Western Europe and Russia, though he didn’t mention when other regions will be receiving theirs. He seems very confident that they can deliver on time though, taking pride in the company’s global PC market share.

Leveraging on its global channels and market share in the global PC market, Acer expects the handset business to be a growth driver within three years,

Wong doesn’t hint on any features or possible designs, but research tells us that Acer’s smartphone for Q1 2009 will feature a touchscreen like the iPhone and will likely cost EUR 500. Hopefully, the usual suspects let us in on any leaks so we can get a clear view of what Acer is preparing.

As suspected, E-Ten has launched its dual-SIM & dual standby Windows Mobile phone called the Glofiish DX900, which is a “simple solution to an increasingly in-demand requirement for consumers who need access to two mobile communications services, but don’t want to carry around two devices at the same time.”

The Glofiish DX900 is now being showcased alongside two other touchscreen handsets, the X610 and the X900. The X610 is a handset that’s being proposed by E-Ten as something that “offers both value and functionally.” It will presumably have built-in GPS (they don’t say specifically) and PIM features that rival most smartphones nowadays. The X900 is a UMTS/HSDPA handset that should be able to serve your mobile browsing needs any time you need it.

The real star of the show, the Glofiish DX900, supports both HSDPA and EDGE. E-Ten even got awarded with the Best Choice of Computex accolade for this device. It also boasts built-in GPS, Wi-Fi, a VGA display and a 3 megapixel camera.

Windows Mobile 6.1 is pre-loaded on top of all these smartphones, and E-Ten’s touch UI will be an entirely new experience. No info was provided regarding regional availability and pricing, though, so that’s one thing you’ve got to watch out for.

Ever since E-ten has been acquired by Acer, we haven’t heard much about new smartphones coming out from the Taiwanese vendor.

Well, now we’ve got some rumors about a interesting handset - E-Ten DX900 Glofiish smartphone, codenamed Hellen. According to Smartmania.cz this phone is supposed to launch at Computex tradeshow in Taipei, June 3-7.

I can not say that there are a lot of improvements in the design of Glofiish DX900, it looks pretty similar to E-ten’s earlier handsets like X600, X800 or it’s latest Glofiish V900.

But the specs they managed to cram into this compact PDA case look impressive.

E-ten DX900 specs include:

Quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900), GPRS, EDGE,

Tri-band UMTS (850/1900/2100), HSDPA connectivity

Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro OS

Samsung SC3 6400 533 MHz CPU

128MB SDRA, 256 MB Flash ROM

2.8″ 640×480 VGA resolution 65K color touchscreen

3 megapixel autofocus camera, 0,3 mpx front camera

built-in GPS SURF III chipset (20 channels)

MicroSDHC memory card slot

1530 0Ah battery

Wi-Fi b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 +EDR, FM Radio

built-in accelerometer

Dimensions: 106×60.5×17 mm

Weight: 147gr

Well, that’s about it for now. And we’ll sure keep you posted as more info about E-Ten Glofiish DX900 emerges.

The pictures also indicate that Glofiish V900 communicator will be Windows Mobile based and will have two cameras, which implies at least UMTS and more likely HSDPA connectivity.

And, of course, we already know about the mobile TV in E-Ten V900 – it will come with DVB-H, DVB-T, T-DMB and DAB reception capability.

And now, here’s how E-Ten Glofiish V900 will look like:

Ain’t she a beauty, eh?

When FCC site site first revealed the E-Ten Glofiish X800 Pocket PC Phone I checked the specs and really liked them. As I said then, “about the only thing missing about X800 is QWERTY keyboard.

Well, the powers that be must have been listening and produced another cool GPS Pocket PC Phone – E-ten Glofiish M800, with all the goodies that X800 had and QWERTY keyboard as well:

E-Ten Glofiish M800 appeared on <a href="http://go.unwiredview.com.?id=3730X622581&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fgullfoss2.fcc.gov%2Foetcf%2Feas%2Freports%2FViewExhibitReport.cfm%3Fmode%3DExhibits%26amp%3BRequestTimeout%3D500%26amp%3BcalledFromFrame%3DN%26amp%3Bapplication_id%3D819289%26amp%3Bfcc_id%3D&sref=rss"SPUM800'" target="_blank">FCC site today, so it must be headed for the U.S. too.

Specwise, Glofiish M800 is almost the same as X800, except that the keyboard ads some additional weight (~40 gr) and thickness (~3mm).

Full E-Ten Glofiish M800 specs include:

Windows Mobile 6 Professional OS

Samsung SC3 2442, 500 MHz CPU

256 MB Flash ROM, 64 MB SDRAM

2.8″, 640 x 480 (VGA), 65,536 colors, TFT-LCD touchscreen

HSDPA / UMTS (2100/1900/850 MHz)

GSM Quad-band 850/900/1800/1900 MHz

EDGE class 10, GPRS class 10

Bluetooth® v2.0 Class 2 + EDR

WiFi IEEE 802.11b/g

Built-in GPS module (SiRF Star III)

microSD memory card slot

2 Mpx Auto-Focus with flashlight, up to 1600×1200 resolution camera

0.3 Mpx Fixed-Focus Camera for video calls

Dimensions: 113.8(L) x 57.8 (W) x 18.4 (H) mm

Weight: 178g

Well, it looks like we have one interesting phone on our hands, and it should be a serious competition to HTC TyTN II PDA phone.

We’ve already heard about another upcoming GPS equipped Windows Mobile PDA phone from E-ten – Glofiish X600 next week.

Now, thanks to Russian mobile site Portavik.ru, we can bring you very good resolution pics and specs for Glofiish X600:

The specification list for E-ten X600 PDA phone include:

Quad band GSM (850/900/1800/1900 MHz), GPRS/EDGE

Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, Wi-Fi b/g

Mini USB

Windows Mobile Professional OS

Samsung SC3 2442 400 MHz CPU

128 MB Flash ROM, 64 MB SDRAM

2.8″, 320×240 QVGA, 65K color TFT LCD Touchscreen (finger/stylus)

2 megapixel camera

Embedded SiRF Star III GPS chipset

MicroSD card slot

1530 mAh battery for

up to 6 hrs talk and 170 hrs standby time

Dimensions: 107x58x14.7 mm

Weight: 136 gr

Overall E-ten X600 Glofiish Pocket PC phone has pretty good specs for a 2.5G device.

But looking at the overall spec sheet, I can not find any reason to prefer X600 to E-Ten Glofiish X800 or Glofiish X500+ devices. Well, maybe E-ten X600 will be significantly cheaper, or something.

0.3 Mpx Fixed-Focus Camera for video calls

Except for the 2 megapixel camera, which looks a little lame among all the other specs, E-Ten Glofiish would probably be the most powerful PDA phone/Pocket PC on the market, and one among very few devices featuring full VGA 640 x480 px display.

But the specs ain’t everything, so it would be really interesting to see how E-Ten Glofiish performs in the real world.

The wait for the E-Ten Glofiish X800 Pocket PC Phone is almost over. And it was worth it. First shown off during CeBit tradeshow in March, feature packed E-Ten X800 has won a number of awards and praises from various tech publications worldwide.

Yesterday E-Ten Glofiish X800 has been approved by FCC and should soon start shipping in the U.S and worldwide.

Along with all the approval documentation came users manual with full specs for the E-Ten X800. And they are really impressive, sporting such features as built-in GPS, 640×480 VGA display and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Full specs for E-Ten Glofiish X800 include:

Windows Mobile 6 Professional OS

Samsung SC3 2442, 500 MHz CPU

256 MB Flash ROM, 64 MB SDRAM

2.8″, 640 x 480 (VGA), 65,536 colors, TFT-LCD touchscreen

HSDPA / UMTS (2100/1900/850 MHz)

GSM Quad-band 850/900/1800/1900 MHz

EDGE class 10, GPRS class 10

Bluetooth® v2.0 Class 2 + EDR

WiFi IEEE 802.11b/g

Built-in GPS module (SiRF Star III)

2 Mpx Auto-Focus with flashlight, up to 1600×1200 resolution camera

0.3 Mpx Fixed-Focus Camera for video calls

1530 mAh Li-Ion Polymer Battery

Dimensions: 113.5 (L) x 60.5 (W) x 15.8 (H) mm

Weight: 139g

E-Ten X800 Glofiish has the looks and the features to become a really great small PC in your pocket. The only thing that may be lacking about X800 is QWERTY keyboard or just a simple numeric keypad, since WM6 text and number entry on a touchscreen with a stylus is not really for everyone.

Oh, and I think E-Ten could afford Adobe Acrobat or other pdf creation software, since the message “PDF created with pdfFactory Pro trial version www.pdffactory.com” on every page of publicly available users manual looks kinda funny.
