Hewlett-Packard (HP), the giant American electronics manufacturer, has announced the upcoming availability of a new display technology that should allow consumers to personalize various devices – like mobile phones, MP3 players, digital cameras, notebooks and netbooks.

The technology is called Electronic Skins (or eSkins). It basically allows manufacturers to apply a “flexible reflective color film” on any of the above-mentioned devices.

eSkins leverage on HP’s innovative roll-to-roll manufacturing platform and make use of a special ink technology, providing “an electronically controlled color surface” and being able to “reflectively display icons and alpha-numeric characters.”

“HP’s eSkins technology allows our partners in the consumer electronics industry to further differentiate their products by introducing a dynamic, durable and reflective digital surface to enable new design freedom,” declared Ken Abbott, director, Emerging Technology, Technology Development Organization, Inkjet and Web Solutions Business, HP.

HP said that it would demonstrate the “roll-to-roll manufacturing platform on which eSkins technology was developed” on June 4, during Display Week 2009 (San Antonio, TX, USA). Maybe then it will be clearer how exactly the new technology can improve a mobile phone, for example.

If Rogers’ BlackBerries are not what you want but you are in need of a new smartphone, the largest Canadian carrier has just outed the HP iPAQ 910c – a Windows Mobile 6.1 device that might just be your thing.

While it’s been officially announced by HP back in 2007, the iPAQ 910c has only now got the chance to be released by a North American carrier.

The handset may not look extremely pretty to you, as it has a classic smartphone-like design, in the vein of Motorola’s Q series.

Anyway, the looks don’t matter that much, especially since the 910c has quite a nice set of specs and features, including:

Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE connectivity (850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz)

Tri-band HSPA connectivity (850 / 1900 / 2100 MHz)

A full QWERTY keyboard

A 2.4 inch touchscreen display with 320 x 240 pixels

GPS

Wi-Fi

A 3.2MP camera with autofocus and video recording

256MB of internal memory

MicroSD car support, up to 4GB

HP iPAQ 910c can be bought from Rogers for as low as $249.95 (with a 3-yr contract agreement). Its free of contract price is of $499.95.

We haven’t been hearing much from HP recently, but apparently, the company’s been working very quietly on two new iPAQs, which have just been unveiled as the HP iPAQ Data Messenger and HP iPAQ Voice Messenger. One of these devices features a touchscreen display, while the other has a QWERTY keyboard fitted into an alphanumeric keypad. But what other goodies does each new iPAQ hold? Read on to find out.

The first iPAQ we’re going to be discussing is the new HP iPAQ Data Messenger. It’s the one pictured on the left, and has a 2.8-inch touchscreen display, with LED backlight and 320 x 240 pixels. What’s not seen at first glance is its built-in slide-out alphanumeric QWERTY keyboard, and it runs on Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional.

The HP iPAQ Data Messenger also has GPS (It comes with a 30 Day Trial for Turn-by-Turn Navigation with Google Maps for Mobile), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, 3G/HSDPA and a 3 megapixel camera with LED flash. Desktop syncing is done via its microUSB port and it’s powered by a removable and rechargeable 1140 mAh Lithium-Polymer battery. Memory is taken care of with 128 MB SDRAM for applications, 256 MB flash ROM, and a microSD card slot.

On the other hand, the HP iPAQ Voice Messenger only has a 2.4-inch non-touchscreen display, and yet retains most, if not all of the exact same features on the HP iPAQ Data Messenger. It also has a 3 megapixel camera with LED flash, built-in GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, HSDPA data, support for microSD cards and even a QWERTY keyboard (with two characters per key on its 20-key alphanumeric keypad). It also runs on Windows Mobile 6.1.

The HP iPAQ Voice Messenger will be available by mid-November for about $570 USD while the HP iPAQ Data Messenger will come on the end of November for about $680 USD.

For mobile phones, there are very few weeks as groundbreaking as this one. There have been an incredible number of announcements and launch dates that makes the gadget lover drool all over themselves (and it’s only Tuesday!). The next one on the list is the latest in the iPAQ lineup, the Hewlett-Packard iPAQ 900 Series Business Messenger.

This particular PDA will be shipped as early as June 30, the HP press release claims. Just as many of the PDAs being released lately, this gem offers quad-band GSM/EDGE world support as well as tri-band 7.2 Mbps UMTS/HSDPA.

It will sport Windows Mobile 6.1 with touchscreen display, WiFi b/g and Bluetooth connectivity, GPS navigation, and come equipped with a 3 MP camera. It also takes advantage of Microsoft Internet Sharing software which enables faster tethering to the internet on your laptop.
The top picture shows the official HP press photo when it was originally announced last fall. The bottom picture shows the iPAQ900 as it was approved by the FCC. Are they supposed to be the same model, and the look simply evolved since last fall? Discuss.

The pricing will differ for each country and region, so stay tuned for more information on that when available.

We told you that full new HP iPAQ line-up is coming. We just didn’t think it will come so soon. Just a few hours after we published the info about upcoming new iPAQ’s, HP has officially announced them during major presentation event in New York.

One thing’s for sure. HP is no Apple and not even Nokia, when it comes to building buzz about their new products. How come nobody even breathed that there is a major HP/Compaq product launch event coming?!

Anyway, enough with the rant, let’s get back to the products.

There were 5 new iPaq handhelds announced by HP:

HP iPAQ 900 Series Business Messenger represented by HP iPAQ 910/ 914 quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE and Tri-band HSDPA Windows Mobile 6 Pro messaging device with 3 mpx camera, A-GPS, Wi-Fi connectivity and full QWERTY keyboard.

HP iPAQ 600 Series Business Navigator featuring HP iPAQ 610/ 614 quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE and Tri-band HSDPA, A-GPS, Wi-Fi Windows Mobile 6 Pro PDA/phone with Smart Touch Wheel, three-way thumb wheel and a touchscreen for single handed navigation.

HP iPAQ 300 Series Travel Companion – represented by HP iPAQ 310/314 Bluetooth enabled, Windows CE 5 based Navigation device with custom HP interface, Windows Media DRM supporting music/video player . HP iPAQ 310/314 can also double as a Bluetooth based handsfree answering system for you cellphone.

HP iPAQ 200 Series Enterprise Handheld – with HP iPAQ 210/214 Windows Mobile 6 Classic based Pocket PC featuring a big 4″ 260K Color 480×640 px (VGA) resolution touch panel display, WI-Fi b/g with WPA2 security and quite a few Enterprise security and productivity applications

HP iPAQ 100 Series Classic handheld – represented by a HP iPAQ 110/ 114 traditional PDA with Windows Mobile 6 Classic OS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Microsoft Mobile Office and Personal Productivity applications

As you can see we’ve got right most of the things about new iPAQs yesterday. We missed Wi-Fi connectivity in iPAQ 100 series and the accurate description of various interface navigation options on iPAQ 610/614. And there still is some confusion about the numbering schemes.

We’ve got the series numbers for new devices right, but the actual numbers for the iPAQs presented in New York has 10s instead 14s (as in iPaq 610 instead of 614). My guess is that it’s the regional thing and when they get to Europe the new iPAQs will have 4s at the end, with 8s going for Asia.

New pocket PC? PDA? Phone?

Nope. It’s a new concept design by Teague called “Data Center Communications Vision of the Future Server” for HP, that scooped If Design Award at this years CeBit. It is envisioned as:

“… integrated hardware/software mobile technology device enables IT personnel to monitor data center equipment, diagnose and track problems, and perform system services. It visualizes and communicates problems related to HP servers and data centers, and works as a fully-integrated system to streamline day-to-day tasks. It synchronizes with the user’s PC to track inventory, communicating through RFID and Bluetooth to control data center access, and connects through a USB dongle to identify problems and diagnose repairs. Its rubberized surface increases the durability.”

Looks like a lot of effort for a piece of diagnostic equipment. But with rugged laptops all the rage these days, whenever HP decides to create a new rugged Pocket PC/PDA/Phone category, this gadget will be a perfect start.
