Our doubts about whether HTW S116 solar powered mobile phone is real were put to rest really quick, when Engadget Mobile got their hands on it.

It will take about 12 hours of sunlight to fully charge the phone, however 1 hour of direct light exposure gives you 30 minutes of talk time. 1:2 talk/charge ratio looks really good here.

Other known features for HTW S116 are 1.3 megapixel camera, 320×240 QVGA display and small LCD front panel with information on battery charge time.

High Tech Wealth’s S116 works only on GSM 900/1900 networks will go on sale in China next month for $400 to 500.

Now, when will we be able to see this one here in Europe again?

Remember Philips Xenium phones, that can last almost forever without charging? Now Chinese manufacturer HTW Electronics has something better in mind:

No, it’s not another MOTOKRZR rip-off. This is “eco-friendly” HTW S116 Solar Mobile Phone, that has all 47.6x84x0.8 mm surface covered with solar cells to charge it’s Li-Ion battery

The phone can provide you with 20-25 minutes of talk time after 40 minutes of charging in direct sunlight and is operational in an emergencies from the 5 candle lights.

For now the durability of the S116 Solar phone is not that impressive, especially since we are used to carry our phones in the pockets and bags, without directly exposing them to the sunlight. Still, as a provision of additional power source, the idea looks attractive.

Other features of HTW S116 include 1.3 Mpx camera, external memory card slot and 320×240 px QVGA display.

It has been presented at CeBit last week, but it was only a “paper presentation” with no actual product to see, so it’s hard to tell how close to reality HTW Solar Phone S116 is.

However HTW Electronics claims that it will start selling S116 in China next moth.

Update:Â I was wrong about the “paper presentation”. Engadget Mobile got their hands on a working HTW S116 solar phone at Cebit.
