It looks like the Android-based and 5-megapixel snapping Lenovo Ophone is ready for primetime, as according to a report from Reuters, China Mobile is said to be planning the launch of the same within the first quarter of this year. Which is in the next couple of months.

The Ophone is, of course, based on the open-source Android OS. It’s going to be one of the first “high-end” Android phones to be ever released, sporting a very sleek and simplistic design, with support for China Mobile’s TD-SCDMA technology.

Reuters’ sources was quoted as saying, “The product is in the final testing stage at the moment.” And I’m sure you know exactly what that means.

So if you’ve been waiting for a chance to paw at this handset after first seeing it in live pictures, your time will come soon enough.

There’s no denying that the Lenovo Ophone is indeed sexy, far more sexier than the G1, and quite possibly even sleeker than the iPhone itself. But how well it really works still remains a mystery. We’ll find out for sure once either Lenovo or China Mobile spill out official details regarding it.

Of course, it’s also possible that an insider would find a way to get his hands on this handset, and test it out for us in advance. But until that happens, we’ll just have to settle on these live photos for now.

The Android fever is surely spreading quickly, and the latest manufacturer to unveil a handset that runs on Google’s open source OS is Lenovo – yes, the China-based company mainly known for its laptops and desktop PCs.

Well, Lenovo also makes mobile phones (take P960, for example), and right now it’s working on an Android one called Ophone. We’ve heard about it before, when reports about a collaboration between Lenovo and China Mobile appeared, but there were no details on the handset’s design.

Now an image with the Ophone leaked on the Web, via Mod my Gphone, unveiling a device that looks way better than the T-Mobile G1. And I dare say it also looks better than Apple’s iPhone, although I’m sure many of you will disagree. Anyway, here’s the Ophone:

There are no details about the handset’s features, save for the fact that its Android OS is somehow modified to work with China Mobile’s TD-SCDMA technology. This being said, it’s most likely that the Ophone will only be commercialized across China, unless a GSM or a regular CDMA version of it is also build.

What’s interesting is that a British company called O’WONDER says it owns the OPHONE trademark. Even more, the trademark seems to be for a handset that will be based on Android too.

This means that, most probably, Lenovo will have to change the official name of its first Android device. But regardless of how it will dub it, the handset has lots of chances to be a huge success in China.

Via Engadget

The folks over at Lenovo sure know how to be eccentric. Just check out the form factor-or more specifically, the keypad-on a new smartphone they’ve made. Enhanced by a made-for-mobile fingerprint solution from Altrua Technologies, the Lenovo P960 is a tool that will keep all your data safe-supposedly.

Other than its built-in Fingerprint Biometrics Security tech and so-called “VIP recording” (which records calls from pre-assigned phone numbers), the Lenovo P960 features just about the same features as most premium smartphones nowadays.

Lenovo P960

As is the trend lately, the Lenovo P960 is equipped with a 2.8-inch touchscreen display, 1.3 megapixel camera and microSD card slot. It’s screen supports stylus-based input, while below it you’ll find the non-traditional numerical keypad as well as a few soft keys and a four-way D-pad.

Too bad the it doesn’t run 3G speeds and can only work on GSM dual-band networks, though, but if you can’t settle for anything less in mobile data security, this model offers a lot to help you out.

In an online press release today the Swedish mobile company Ericsson announced their plans to supply HSPA/GPS modules for new Dell laptops, starting Q2 2008.

HSPA (High-Speed Packet Access) is the world’s most widespread form of 3G broadband, capable of providing download speeds of up to 14.4 Mbit/s (in theory) and up to 7.2 Mbit/s in already existing deployments; according to Ericsson’s data, there are 185 commercial networks around the world using this standard.

The built-in HSPA modules will allow the owners of Dell laptops to enjoy seamless roaming while traveling through a region covered by one of these, as well as use the GPS and the positioning software.

Dell laptops will have HSPA&GPS modules from Ericsson built in them starting with the second quarter of this year:

The pricing details are not yet released.

This is not the first time that Ericsson strikes such a deal, having signed the first contract for their mobile broadband modules with Lenovo back in February. Lenovo’s ThinkPad laptops now come with integrated mobile broadband and GPS.

Ericsson estimates that by 2011, approximately 200 million laptops will be sold each year, and half of them will have HSPA broadband modules integrated.

So, you think that for mobile phone gaming to succeed, the phones should have a massive memory, graphics processing capabilities, big screens and other things that makes them popular on desktops?

But what about the tons of massively popular games that are already out there from years ago? They did not need and didn’t have anything of the above. In fact, your current average handset is much more powerful computer then a PC or gaming console you had 10-15 years ago.

So why not take a popular gaming system, like NES, put it’s software emulator into a phone, add some accessories like D-Pad for game control, an run with it. You already have a tons of ready to go cheap games and a nostalgic fan base to boot.

Well, that’s exactly what Lenovo is thinking with their new Lenovo i909 gaming phone.

Lenovo i909 is a good looking candybar handset with 2.4″ 262K color QVGA TFT display, 2 megapixel camera, microSD memory card slot, mp3 and video player, 111.4 × 50.2 × 15.5 mm dimensions and 112.8 gr weight. Overall, traditional, well designed, low to mid-end handset.

What makes Lenovo i909 special – is a software emulator that let’s you play NES games on it, and a cool D-pad controller that attaches to the phone and makes your gaming experience even more fun.

Looks like a nice idea, which, unfortunately, will be available only in China for now.
