Motorola Motus shows up, specs included

First seen in a leaked Motorola roadmap which included the Sholes Tablet and the Zeppelin, Motorola Motus has now appeared in a leaked photo, together with most of its specs.

Like the already-available Motorola Cliq, Motorola Motus should come with Android 1.5 and the Motoblur interface.

The Motus has quad-band GSM connectivity and – weird enough – it looks like it also supports the 850/900/1700/1900/2100 MHz WCDMA bands, which means that both AT&T and T-Mobile could launch it.

Other specs include:

3.1 inch touchscreen display with 320 x 480 pixels
Full QWERTY keyboard
Wi-Fi
GPS
Bluetooth 2.0
5MP camera with LED flash
528 MHz Qualcomm MSM7201A processor
512 MB ROM and 256 MB RAM

The phone’s QWERTY keyboard is actually a reverse flip keyboard with a “rear directional pad.”

Motorola Motus should be announced in the first quarter of 2010.

Motorola Crush touchscreen phone announced for US Cellular

Motorola has just unveiled a brand new touchscreen phone called Motorola Crush.

The Crush is an EV-DO Rev. 0 device with an interesting design, having the power and lock keys above its 2.8 inch, 240 x 400 pixels touchscreen display, and no keys at all below it.

The phone further features a virtual QWERTY keyboard, a tap-to-silence feature, stereo Bluetooth, music player, 3.5mm headset jack, 2MP camera, MicroSD card support (up to 16GB) and a 950 mAh battery.

Motorola Crush should be available via US Cellular before the end of 2009. The phone’s price was not announced, but Motorola says it will be affordable.

Update: US Cellular sells the Motorola Crush for $80 with a 2-yr contract agreement and after a $50 mail-in rebate.

Motorola MT710 oPhone is like a keyboard-less Droid for China

The Motorola Droid is certainly one of the hottest phones Moto ever had, and perhaps that’s why the company plans to launch a similar handset in China.

Said handset is called Motorola MT710 and it’s an oPhone, meaning that it runs an Android OS customized for China Mobile.

The MT710 resembles the Droid, but it has no sliding QWERTY keyboard. Its features are similar as well, including a 3.7 inch touchscreen display with 845 x 480 pixels and Wi-Fi. The smartphone will also feature TD-SCDMA connectivity and CMMB (China Multimedia Mobile Broadcasting) support.

Details about the exact release date and price of Motorola MT710 are missing.

Another Moto Android phone that should be released soon in China is the Motorola Zeppelin.

Motorola Quantico and Debut i856w announced

Today, Motorola unveiled a brand new rugged phone: Motorola Quantico, a clamshell that comes with a “tough-as-nails exterior” made out of rubber, chrome, glass and mesh.

The phone meets military specification 810F and can be submerged in water (1m) for up to 30 minutes without being damaged.

Other features and specs include: CDMA 1700/2100 and 800/1900 EVDO connectivity, 2.2 inch internal display with 176 x 220 pixels, 1.6 inch external display with 120 x 160 pixels, GPS, Stereo Bluetooth, Music player, 2.5mm headset jack, MMS, email, 1.3MP camera, MicroSD card support and a 1140 mAh battery.

Motorola Quantico will be available in the US before the end of 2009. No word on its price.

Another Moto phone introduced today is the Motorola Debut i856w – which is actually a new version of the Debut i856, launched by Sprint and Boost Mobile earlier this year.

The Motorola Debut i856w is available through Boost Mobile and it’s targeted at the carrier’s female consumers. It costs $149.99 and, as you can see in the photos above, it features “stylish ivory coloring and flattering front and back detailing” – which make it the pretties iDEN phone ever.

100,000 Motorola Droids sold by Verizon in the first week-end?

Launched by Verizon on November 6, the Motorola Droid has been – apparently – sold in about 100,000 units in the first week-end – a number that’s not exactly comparable with the 1 million iPhone 3GSs sold by AT&T in the first week-end of availability, but, nevertheless, it’s a good start for Verizon’s first Android smartphone.

According to Bloomberg, analyst Mark McKechnie at Broadpoint AmTech Inc. says that Verizon’s stores across the US had about 200,000 Droids at launch and most of the stores sold “at least half of their stock”, so there actually may have been quite well over 100,000 units delivered.

Marketed as an iPhone rival, Motorola Droid is currently available at Verizon for $199.99 with a contract agreement for two years.

Motorola might sell about 1 million Android phones by the end of 2009 (including the Milestone and the Cliq / Dext), and about 9 to 10 million next year. At the same time, analysts expect Apple to ship about 28.5 iPhones in 2010.

Telus officially launching Motorola Milestone (Droid) in early 2010

Motorola Milestone (the GSM version of Moto Droid) will be released in Canada in early 2010, via Telus – which launched its new HSDPA network last week.

The Milestone is the world’s first smartphone to use Android 2.0 and comes with many high-end features, including: 3.7 touchscreen display with 480 x 854 pixels, full QWERTY keyboard, Wi-Fi, A-GPS, digital compass, stereo speakers, 3.5mm headset jack, 5MP autofocus camera and D1 video recording.

All in all, Motorola Milestone will be a very nice addition to Telus’ new line-up of GSM/HSDPA phones, which includes the iPhone, HTC Hero, Nokia E71 and LG New Chocolate BL40.

Update: Motorola has officially announced the Milestone for Telus. It will indeed be available in early 2010, although Moto didn’t say for what price.

Moto Droid / Milestone not coming to O2 and T-Mobile in the UK?

Motorola Milestone (the GSM version of Verizon’s Droid) has been officially announced for Germany, Italy and Brazil, and there will certainly be more countries and more carriers to announce it in the future.

If you’re in the UK, you should know that leading mobile operators O2 and T-Mobile will not offer the Milestone at all – or at least that’s what T3 is reporting.

Apparently, T-Mobile UK tested the Droid about six months ago; Nicola Shenton, the operator’s Head of Handset and Device Marketing, confirmed that they chose not to carry it. The exact reason for this is unknown, but it may have something to do with the fact that T-Mo already sells three Android phones in the UK: G1, Hero and Pulse.

So it looks like it’s up to Vodafone, Orange or 3 to bring the Milestone to UK consumers. Let’s hope that at least one of these operators will announce the new Android 2.0 smartphone soon.

Verizon’s Motorola Droid to get tethering in early 2010

Some may find it “stupid and unnecessary“, but tethering is clearly a feature that many users want their handsets to have.

While Motorola didn’t say anything about tethering being available for its latest and greatest smartphone – the Droid – it looks like Verizon will offer the feature, although not this year.

According to Gearlog, the largest US carrier will allow tethering for the Droid in early 2010, thanks to its Broadband Access Connect plan – this will probably add $15 to your Droid monthly plan.

As a reminder, Verizon will sell the Motorola Droid starting November 6, for $199.99 on contract – many of Verizon’s stores will open early in the morning.

Brazil gets the Motorola Milestone too, multi-touch included

Almost immediately after being announced for Europe, the Motorola Milestone was also announced in Brazil – obviously as the country’s first Android 2.0 smartphone.

Known as Motorola Droid in the US (where Verizon will release it on November 6), the Milestone is clearly one of Moto’s nicest handsets to date.

The highlight features of Milestone / Droid include: 3.7 inch TFT multi-touch display with 854 x 480 pixels, full QWERTY keyboard, HSDPA/HSUPA connectivity, GPS, Wi-Fi, 3.5mm headset jack, and a 1400 mAh battery.

Motorola Milestone will be available in Brazil before the year’s end, via TIM, the third largest Brazilian mobile carrier. The smartphone’s price was not unveiled (however, you should know that in the US it will cost $200 on contract).

Motorola Ruby finally gets official as MOTO Klassic in Korea

The long-rumored Motorola Ruby (or V13) has finally been announced by Motorola, although under a different name and only in South Korea.

The Korean Ruby is called MOTO Klassic and will be available via SK Telecom, featuring CDMA Ev-DO connectivity.

As we mentioned before, the phone has two QVGA displays (the external one being touch-sensitive), a 5MP autofocus camera, GPS, Bluetooth, MicroSD card support, and a 950 mAh battery.

No word yet if Motorola plans to release the Ruby / Klassic outside Korea, but you can check out the phone on its official (Korean) website.

Verizon opens stores early for the Motorola Droid

We all know that the Motorola Droid will be available from Verizon starting November 6 (this Friday). Now Verizon announced that many of its Communications Stores across the US will open early Friday morning – some stores will open at 7 AM, while others at 8 AM.

Those who are eagerly waiting to buy a Droid should visit local stores to check the exact opening hours (note that Verizon’s Mall stores will not open early).

In addition to launching the Motorola Droid, Verizon will “host demonstrations at select locations to help customers get the most” from the new Android smartphone.

Moreover, the largest US mobile carrier announced “Droid Does Times Square” – an interactive experience that will be set up in New York City, allowing callers to control two of Times Square’s largest digital billboards (from NASDAQ and Reuters) via voice commands. Participants will be able to call a toll-free number and search for any location they want – which will then be displayed on the giant boards thanks to Google Maps. “Droid Does Times Square” will take place from November 6 through November 20.

The Droid by Motorola (known as Motorola Milestone in Europe) is not only the world’s first device to come with Android 2.0, but also the first Android phone to have a touchscreen display of 854 x 480 pixels (Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 is the second to have such a display). Other features include a full QWERTY keyboard, Wi-Fi, GPS, 3.5mm headset jack, and a 5MP autofocus camera.

Verizon will sell the Motorola Droid for $199.99 with a 2-year contract agreement and after a $100 mail-in rebate. If you don’t want to wait for that rebate, you can buy the Droid from Best Buy.

WAT: Why Europeans did not get Google’s free turn-by-turn navigation on Motorola Milestone

Once in a while, after certain events, theories about the happenings in mobile industry start bouncing around my head.

Some of them turn out to be a complete BS, a few happen to be spot on, and quite a few are somewhere in the middle. I’d like to share them to get some input of whether I’m going completely bonkers, or not.

So I’m starting a new category of posts on UV – “Wild arsed theories” or WAT – just for this purpose. These will be a pure speculation on my part, based on some things I see happing in the market.

Today lets start with the Android stuff. With the release of Motorola Milestone in Europe, two questions have been buggering me.

1. Why there’s no Google’s free turn-by-turn navigation app in a European version of Droid (Motorola Milestone).

2. What’s happening with the frigging Android OS upgrades? First we get Android 1.6 Donut upgrade. Then, in a few weeks, a phone running Android 2.0/Eclair comes out. However none of the other Android handsets, coming out this year, mention anything about Android 2.0. All of them, apparently, are still running Android 1.6. Even uber high end Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, announced today, but due only in Q1 2010.

Well, I think, I may have answers to both of these questions. Let’s start with the first today, and get to second tomorrow.

Why there is no free turn-by-turn navigation in Motorola Milestone? And it ain’t comig anytime soon

It all comes down to the mapping data. Take a look at these screenshots:

See the difference? The copyright notice for the area around Kansas City says that map data is owned by Google. The same notice for London says that map data is owned by Tele Atlas.

And it’s the same all over the world. Play a bit with Google maps yourself. What you will see is that the map data anywhere in the United States is owned by Google. Even in remote places like Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.

Just cross the border, to Canada or Mexico, and another company name springs up in the map data ownership field. TeleAtlas, INEGO, Europa Technologies, etc;

What this tells us is, that, for now, Google has collected enough of it’s own mapping data only for the United States. And since they own the data there, they are free to use it however they like. Including provision of a free turn-by-turn navigation services, that screws the business model for paid nav service and gadget providers like Garmin and TomTom.

But all the mapping data for Western Europe in Google maps, is provided by TeleAtlas, owned by Tom Tom. Do you think Tom Tom is eager to provide Google with the data that could destroy their paid service and the main income source? I am pretty sure, that somewhere in a contract between Tele Atlas and Google, there is a clause, explicitly forbidding Google to offer tbt navigation, using Tele Atlas data.

So now what? Tough luck for us, Europeans? No free navigation from Google here?

Yes. For now.

But don’t think Google is sitting still and won’t be able to collect all that European map data for itself. Those Google Street View cars are not driving around just for fun.

We know that Google is able to collect it’s own mapping data and they are heavily investing in it. They already did so in the U.S, after all. And as soon as Google has enough of it for Western Europe, the navigation services will come here too.

Motorola Milestone (Droid) officially launched in Europe. Gets multi-touch, loses free navigation

We already knew that the Motorola Droid handset won’t featured only on Verizon network.

There were enough trustworthy sources and hints, claiming that this hot Motorola Android 2.0 handset is headed for Europe too.

We just didn’t expect to get it across the pond quite so fast. Motorola Droid was just announced by Verizon last week, and today it already launches as Motorola Milestone in Europe.

Motorola Milestone is is not exactly the same phone as Verizon Droid. In one way it’s better – Motorola Milestone comes with multi-touch pinch&zoom gesture support, which, for some reason, was disabled in Droid.

But it loses free turn-by-turn navigation from Google, probably because this feature is not ready for primetime in Europe yet. Instead Motorola Milestone comes with a trial version of MOTONAV turn-by-turn navigation, which is free for the first 60 days, but then a license fee kicks-in.

Otherwise Motorola Milestone is the same old Droid with:

WCDMA/900/2100, GSM 850/900/1800/1900, HSPA, GPRS connectivity
Android 2.0 OS
3.7″; WVGA (480 x 854 pixels); 16:9 widescreen; PPI 267
5 megapixel camera
Wi-Fi, GPS, Accelerometer
1400 mAh battery

And all other goodies original Droid had.

Italy and Germany will be the first markets to get Motorola Milestone,other markets will have to wait for it a bit.

Verizon: Our 3G Network Can Handle Large Droid Demand

Certain smartphones have become so popular in the US that the large amount of demand was too much for the data network supporting it, thus causing slower internet downloads and dropped calls. Verizon has made it perfectly clear that it is fully prepared for whatever strain its new Motorola Droid will inflict upon its network.

Considering the general public’s concern on the drain the iPhone’s demand has been on AT&T’s 3G network, Verizon Director of data services for the Illinois-Wisconsin region Arvin Singh is attempting to put those concerns to rest.

He says Verizon expects heavy demand of the Motorola Droid, and it has long architected its EV-DO Revision A network to handle these kinds of capacities.

“We’re anticipating the Droid will be a blockbuster, but we’re not adding any new backhaul or new EV-DO carriers for the launch. We’re not anticipating the network will take a hit on this.”

Obviously Verizon is rather confident in its network. So the big test is coming. They expect a blockbuster phone, and there is a very good chance the Droid will live up to the expectations. Now we sit back and see how right or wrong Verizon was in making those claims.

We know it would be difficult to be any worse than the iPhone’s strain on AT&T’s current data network, but will Verizon be any better off? VZW is almost cocky about its network, but AT&T is usually just as confident about its data capabilities.

Motorola to Launch 20+ Smartphones in 2010

So it appears the Motorola Droid is just the beginning of the company’s rebirth back into mobile phone prosperity, as indicated by a statement by CEO Sanjay Jha during the press announcement of the Droid yesterday.

At first Sanjay mentioned the number of new smartphones would be in “multiple tens”, before clarifying that at least 20 would be released.

This seems to be a rather good indication that Motorola is back on the right track, and is ready to pull some hefty competition on everyone else.

So here’s the thing: given Motorola’s dumping of virtually every OS but Android, we’re wondering how many of these 20+ smartphones will be Android and how many will be WinMo. We know Moto isn’t interested in 6.5 but most likely is waiting for 7 to come out; will it be a 50/50 split between WM7 and Android?

As you know, I love to speculate and ask questions. Only time will be able to answer those questions, but my hope is to spark conversation in our comments about this. My brain tells me it’s too soon for Motorola to make such a large commitment before posting some good quarterly numbers, but it shows that Moto is very confident in its future, and that should be applauded.

If you want to buy a Motorola Droid without waiting for that $100 mail-in rebate announced by Verizon, Best Buy is the place where you can do so.

The giant American retailer announced that it would pre-sell Verizon’s Moto Droid starting October 29, offering a $100 instant saving instead of a mail-in rebate. This way, you can get the Droid for $199.99 right away (a 2-yr Verizon contract agreement is obviously required).

Of course, even if you pre-buy the Droid on October 29, you’ll still have to wait until November 6 to have it.

In case you don’t know yet, Motorola Droid is the world’s first smartphone to run Android 2.0 (Eclair). Its features include a 3.7 inch WVGA multi-touch display, full QWERTY keyboard, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, 3.5mm headset jack, 5MP autofocus camera with flash, and an ARM Cortex A8 550 MHz processor.

Motorola posts Q3 results, Mobile Devices unit loses $183 million

Hot on the heels of announcing the high-end Droid for Verizon, Motorola has just posted its Q3 2009 financial results.

While its Enterprise Mobility Solutions and Home and Networks Mobility units reported operating earnings of $306 million and $199 million respectively, Moto’s Mobile Devices unit is still bleeding money, ending the third quarter with an operating loss of $183 million.

13.6 million Motorola phones were shipped in Q3 2009, totalizing sales of $1.7 billion. Since Sony Ericsson reported it sold 14.1 million phones in the third quarter, Motorola is probably the world’s fifth handset maker at the moment, with an estimated global market share of 4.7%.

When it comes to phones, Moto’s greatest achievements in Q3 2009 are obviously the announcements of its first two Android devices: Motorola Cliq and Motorola Droid (pictured above). The Cliq is already on sale both in the US and in Europe (as Motorola Dext), while the Droid will be available starting November 6 via Verizon, in CDMA flavor.

There are no official details about the release of a GSM Droid, but since we saw one yesterday, it probably won’t be long until Moto announces it. Seeing how the Droid captured everyone’s attention, Motorola would actually make a dumb move if it won’t bring it to Europe.

GSM Motorola Droid caught on video

Shortly after Verizon announced its CDMA Motorola Droid, a GSM version of the phone has appeared over in Vietnam.

The GSM Droid looks like the CDMA one, but its nav-pad is not golden and the phone is obviously not Verizon-branded.

Specs-wise, the GSM Droid should be similar to the CDMA version, so we expect it to have a 3.7 inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen display, Android 2.0, Wi-Fi, GPS and a 5MP camera with autofocus and dual-Led flash.

At the moment, there are no clear details about a Moto Droid release outside the US, but the video above lets us hope that we’ll soon see the smartphone in Europe and Asia too.

Motorola and Verizon Wireless have just announced the Motorola Droid, the world’s first Android 2.0 smartphone.

As expected, the Moto Droid will be available from Verizon starting November 6. The price? Well, Verizon asks $199.99 for the Droid, with a 2-yr agreement and after a $100 rebate.

Motorola and Verizon present the Droid as being a “no-fuss, high-tech, location-aware, voice-recognizing, over-the-air updating, multi-tasking machine.”

Most of the smartphone’s features are now confirmed, including the 3.7 inch, 480 x 854 pixels capacitive touchscreen display, EV-DO Rev A connectivity, Wi-Fi, GPS, D1 video playback, stereo Bluetooth, 3.5mm headset jack, Flash 10 ready HTML browser, 5MP autofocus camera with dual-LED flash, 16GB of storage space, MicroSD card support, and 1400 mAh battery.

Funny excerpt from the press release: with a display having “more than 400,000 pixels total, DROID has more than twice that of the leading competitor” – this competitor is most probably the iPhone.

But now the question is: is Verizon’s Droid a better choice than AT&T’s iPhone or not?

Verizon to Launch Droid, Droid Eris on Nov 6

When hearing rumors, one must ask themself: What would BGR speculate? This particular rumor brought to us by BGR is rather juicy, as it indicates that both the Motorola Droid and HTC Droid Eris (Desire?) will be launching on November 6.

Previously we expected to see two different launch dates on these handsets, with the Droid quite possibly around tomorrow-ish. But we can completely understand a double Droid-launch to start the new Droid series off strong.

How confident is BGR on this rumor? They say it’s the closest they can get without having an official announcement. That is particularly strong. Keep you posted.

Droid Passes FCC With AT&T 3G

It’s true, Droid news is flying all over the place like crazy. Ready for some more?

If any of you in the US are hoping for a version of the Droid on AT&T, you’re in luck. While a GSM version had passed the FCC just a few days ago, it only had 3G support for Europe; fortunately though, another version of the Droid was being pushed through at almost the same time. This particular version is all ready to go for North America.

Now we wait to see if it will be picked up by AT&T and/or Rogers. It will be interesting to see what happens in the coming months.

Below is a sample of the FCC document approving the “Sholes”. As you can see there’s not much to look at, just a couple things confirming the name and frequencies it was approved for.

Droid Will be an Entire Series; HTC Desire Becomes Droid Eris

Some trusty tips from the Engadget peeps reveal one crucially important nugget of enlightened information about the forthcoming Verizon Droid. Up until today the Droid was previously thought of as one single phone known as the Motorola Sholes, but we learned today that it is not just one phone but rather an entire series of phones.

In the short months since the first pieces of info leaked about the Sholes, we have seen a huge evolution in what exactly it is. The handset known as the Sholes will indeed still be dubbed “Droid”, there will just be a lot more of them down the road.

Shortly down the road is the HTC Desire, which will be branded the Droid Eris. This particular handset will be available on November 6. Beyond that it’s anyone’s guess, though I’m sure we’re just seeing the tip of the iceberg here. Will the Droid name be attached to all Verizon Android devices? It seems rather obvious at this point.

So then, if Verizon is going to the length of branding any device that goes with this OS, it must have some rather intense plans on keeping that brand up.

As a sidenote to ponder, Verizon’s commitment to Android may affect future plans it may have with the iPhone. Can Droid and iPhone live in harmony together in the same lineup?

The Motorola Zeppelin from that leaked Moto roadmap for late 2009 / early 2010 seems to be a real phone, as photos of it have allegedly appeared on a Chinese website.

Like Verizon’s Motorola Droid, the Moto Zeppelin runs Android, and apparently it’s the world’s first Android phone to have both GSM and CDMA connectivity – although we’re talking about China-specific CDMA.

The features of Motorola Zeppelin are pretty nice and include: 3.1 inch HVGA touchscreen display, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth 2.1, FM radio, HDMI output, 3.5mm headset jack and a 5MP autofocus camera with flash.

Unfortunately, there’s no photo to show the Zeppelin’s face, so we’ll just have to stare at its back until new images show up:

Motorola Zeppelin should be launched in China in the first quarter of 2010. Details about its price are not known at the moment.

Motorola Aura Diamond Edition announced, costs $5,730

Remember the Motorola Aura, the uber-expensive luxury phone announced by Moto last year and promoted by David Beckham? Well, Moto has announced an even more expensive Aura, called Motorola Aura Diamond Edition.

The new Aura is plated with 18 carat gold and has 34 diamonds, 30 of which are embedded above and bellow the phone’s circular display.

Specs-wise, the Aura offers quad-band GSM/EDGE connectivity, CrystalTalk technology, stereo Bluetooth, Music and video players, email, web browser, 2MP camera and 2GB of internal memory.

Motorola Aura Diamond Edition should be available starting October 26. As for the price, well, the phone costs no less than £3,500 (about €3,815 or $5,730).

If luxury phones aren’t your thing, you should know that Motorola is getting ready to launch the Motorola Droid (via Verizon), which should be the company’s flagship Android phone.

When I told you about that Verizon Droid mini site and video, it was pretty obvious what phone they were talking about.

It was Motorola Sholes/Tao/Droid, that was leaked, and leaked and leaked again tons of times.

But, up until now, it was still a rumor, floating among blogs without any real confirmation.

Well, today, if a bit prematurely, we have that official confirmation from Motorola.

Staying with their poor Web’s’manship tradition, and no idea how to keep things behind the firewall, Motorola made their official Droid minisite (linked removed from Motorola site, for now) accessible to anyone. Almost week before their partners were ready.

So we don’t have to wait until Oct. 28th to know everything there is to know about the mysterious handset.

Here are full specs of Motorola Verizon Droid:

And, of course it’s a Google phone, so all the Google services, including GTalk IM are supported.

Amazon MP3 store, as well as Facebook, Gmail and Exchange integration into a unified contact list is in it. Also POP3 and IMAP4 e-mail.

On the other hand, Motorola Blur service is nowhere in sight. I guess, they had to drop it at the insistence of Verizon, if they wanted to become one of their flagship devices.

And, despite claiming it to be a multimedia powerhouse, they neglected to include the support for the unconverted Xvid/Avi video file playback. Even though those movies would have looked great on a huge 3.7″ WVGA display.

Oh well, I’ll have to find something in Android Marketplace to do that.

Verizon has just sent out invitations to a Droid event that will be held on October 28 (one week from now).

At this event, Verizon will unveil “the most desirable phone of 2009”. Motorola’s logo can be seen on the invitation, so the phone is most probably the Motorola Droid (aka Sholes aka Tao).

As you may already know, Verizon has already kicked off the Droid Does campaign aimed at Apple’s iPhone and its lack of a real keyboard, its inability to take photos in the dark and so on.

Will the Verizon Moto Droid (which obviously runs Android) indeed be more desirable than the iPhone? Let’s wait and see.

Motorola Devour Arrives at the Party, Puts on Nametag

Introducing Motorola’s newest device for us to (hopefully) drool over: the Motorola Devour.

Sadly, we don’t actually know for sure if we will be drooling over the Devour, because we only know its name.

Taking no time whatsoever to wait for the Moto CLIQ and Droid to potentially rake in the big sales, Moto has now passed an unknown device codenamed Devour through the WiFi Alliance.

Isn’t it interesting to see how Motorola is all of a sudden snapping back into life? After years of mediocre offerings, many thought Motorola was taking its last few breaths of life. We now see the sinking phone manufacturer getting revived in a hurry.

So any Captain Observant will realize the Devour will at least have WiFi capability, but that really doesn’t add much to the conversation.

Is it another Android device? Windows Mobile 6.5 is ruled out, considering Moto has announced already that they are waiting to see what WinMo 7 can do before going back to the OS; the only other plausible option is to launch a phone with WiFi that isn’t a smartphone. What do you think?

Verizon’s Motorola Calgary in live photos, MotoBlur confirmed

Motorola Calgary first appeared last year, but it’s only now that we get the change to see its real face.

The handset will be Verizon’s second Android smartphone – after the Motorola Droid, which should be announced any time now.

Like T-Mobile’s Motorola Cliq, the Calgary will feature Moto’s brand new Blur interface.

According to BGR, Motorola Calgary will also come with a full QWERTY keyboard, three touch sensitive keys, Wi-Fi, digital magnetometer, GPS, 3.5mm headset jack, 3MP camera, and MicroSD card support.

Motorola Calgary should be launched by Verizon this quarter, possibly under a different name (Calgary seems to be just a codename). No word yet on the smartphone’s price, but it will probably not be on the hefty side.

If you are currently a T-Mobile customer and are looking for the latest and greatest device, there is a possibility you’ve been eyeballing the Moto CLIQ rather heavily ever since it was announced to be coming to your phone network of choice. Happily, the wait is now officially over.

That’s right, everyone. The CLIQ is now being sold to existing T-Mobile customers. But it’s not being sold to brand new customers quite just yet, since this is considered a perk for those members who already are in “the club”, so to speak.

If you are ready to hop to T-Mobile in order to get the CLIQ, you will be able to grab one as of November 2, giving T-Mobile customers a 2 week head start on the new Android device complete with MOTOBLUR.

Motorola’s line-up of iDEN phones will soon be expanded with the addition of i410, a clamshell that appears over at the FCC with Nextel’s logo on it.

The Motorola i410 has two displays (external and internal), large keys on the inside, and no photo camera. The phone obviously features push to talk, as well as MMS, Bluetooth and GPS.

According to a post at the Howard Forums, Boost Mobile should have launched the i410 in September – although that didn’t happen

Motorola Sholes Tablet, Motus and Zeppelin coming soon?

There’s nothing official about this at the moment, but it looks like Motorola is readying three new mid to high-end handsets for the coming months.

According to a leaked Moto roadmap for Q4 2009 / Q1 2010, the US-based company should announce a so-called Motorola Sholes Tablet early next year, and the Motorola Motus and Zeppelin shortly after.

Of course, all this will happen only after the simple Sholes (aka Droid aka Tao) is announced – we already know that Verizon is very close to doing it.

We don’t know why the Motorola Sholes Tablet is called like that, but we know that its features should include:

3.7 inch touchscreen display with 480 x 854 pixels
HSUPA
8MP camera with autofocus and Xenon flash
720p video via HDMI
Wi-Fi 802.11b/g w/ DLNA
Map 2.0

Next, the Motorola Motus and Motorola Zeppelin look different but share the same specs:

3.1 inch touchscreen display with 480 x 320 pixels
HSUPA
Wi-Fi 802.1 1b/g
5MP autofocus camera

The HVGA displays may suggest that the Motus and Zeppelin are Android smartphones too, but that’s just a guess for now.

Motorola has partnered with Ferrari once again, this time in order to launch a Motorola i9 Ferrari edition via Nextel Brazil.

Already available in the US as Motorola Stature (through Sprint and Boost Mobile), the i9 is one of the best-looking iDEN phones ever, and now it has probably become the only one to have a special edition.

The Motorola i9 Ferrari obviously comes with the Ferrari logo engraved on its case, as well as with Ferrari wallpapers and screensavers. There are also ringtones that mimic the engine sound of Ferrari F40, F50 and Enzo.

Other than that, the i9 Ferrari features two QVGA displays, external illuminated keys, push-to-talk, GPS, Bluetooth, 3.1MP camera and a 2GB memory card in the box.

Nextel Brazil offers the Motorola i9 Ferrari for R$ 1199 (about $688).

About one month after being announced for Boost Mobile, the Motorola Debut i856 is now available at Sprint too, as part of its Nextel Direct Connect line-up of handsets.

The i856 may not be the prettiest phone around, but it’s Sprint’s “first slider phone to offer push-to-talk service”, so it will probably not be overlooked by customers in need of a new iDEN device (unless they want a QWERTY keyboard too, in which case they should check out the Motorola Clutch i465).

The features of Motorola Debut include: 176 x 220 pixels TFT display, large Direct Connect button with backlight, GPS, 3.5mm headset jack, stereo Bluetooth, threaded messaging, MMS, 1.3MP camera and MicroSD card support (up to 8GB).

Sprint sells the Motorola Debut i856 for $99.99 with a 2-yr contract agreement, or $299.99 free of contract.

Holiday Roadmap for Verizon Leaked

’tis the season to learn all the juicy secrets about what new handsets will bedazzle us for the holidays. Obviously we need to have enough time to scope out our potential Black Friday buys, so some leaked information on what new stuff will be out by then is crucial to our shopping preparation.

So here we find Verizon’s holiday roadmap. Here’s what we’ve learned from other sources so far: The HTC Hero is coming in November, The Motorola Tao is coming late October/early November, and we just learned of the Samsung Moment officially today. We also know of the Razzle, Barrage, and Chocolate Touch.

Okay, we also know the Curve 2 and Storm 2 are on the way. Same with the Omnia 2. So what in the world is so groundbreaking about this roadmap?

The difference is that this document shows us the deadlines of each phone and when to expect them by.

For example, Verizon is embracing Android by releasing the Hero and Tao before Black Friday. The Imagio? Already out for B2B, stores should be selling them Oct 20.

Although Windows Mobile 6.5 is on everyone’s lips these days, not all big phone makers are interested in it. Take Motorola for example, which, according to PhoneScoop, will not launch WM 6.5 devices at all.

The reason for this is that Motorola is apparently waiting for Windows Mobile 7 before developing new phones based on Microsoft’s OS.

Needless to say, Motorola’s current platform of choice is Android – for which the company has just announced new third-party solutions.

Moto’s ecosystem partners that have developed solutions and applications for its Android handsets (like the Motorola Cliq / Dext) include: Amazon MP3, Accuweather, Barnes & Noble, Comcast Entertainment Group, CardStar, Hands On Mobile, Howcast.com, MySpace, Midomi, QuickOffice, QuickPlay Media, Superpages.com, RJDJ and Travel Channel.

“Working closely with these companies allows us to provide a compelling mobile Android-based experience that satisfies specific consumer needs,” declared Christy Wyatt, vice president, software applications and ecosystem, Motorola Mobile Devices.

Motorola Dext hits Orange UK on October 7; Verizon’s Droid / Tao / Sholes may come on October 30

We knew that the Motorola Dext was ready to hit Orange UK this month, and now Moto has announced an exact release date: October 7 (two days from now) – way ahead of T-Mobile USA’s Motorola Cliq, which will be on pre-sale starting October 19.

British customers can actually get the Dext on October 6, but only if they visit the new Orange Multimedia Store in Milton Keynes starting 3PM. Phones4U will also sell the smartphone from October 8.

Coming as Moto’s first Android handset, Motorola Dext will be offered by Orange UK for free to customers who choose a 24-month contract agreement of at least £34.26 ($54.6) per month.

Motorola’s second Android handset, called Sholes or Tao or Droid (it’s not clear yet what its official name will be), might be released in the US by Verizon on October 30. BGR has a screenshot of a Verizon calendar which indicates that the smartphone will come on said date, but we can’t be sure about this at the moment.

Interestingly, the calendar also shows that Verizon will announce the BlackBerry Storm 2 this month as well, on October 14. Let’s wait and see.

Motorola Tao Will be Droid on Verizon, to Offer Flash?

A couple tidbits are coming down the pipeline about the Motorola Tao on Verizon — or should I say Motorola Droid?

Yes, it’s all very confusing when you consider the history of this particular Android handset. It first began as the Motorola Shules before moving to Sholes; after that it then became the Tao, and now Verizon is rumored to be branding it as the Droid.

Does this mean that it will still be called the Tao in other parts of the globe? After all, US carriers like to do the same thing with HTC devices (see: Fuze, Tilt, MyTouch 3G, etc.) so it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if this is Verizon’s attempt to make it their own.

A couple other morsels of info to chew on: the Droid will not come with MOTOBLUR but instead be a straight Google device, and it will also have support for Adobe Flash. The iPhone will have nuthin’ on the Droid if it has Flash support.

Updated specs for the Droid include:

3.7″ display
854×480 WVGA capacitive screen
5 MP camera
ARM 500MHz CPU
Facial recognition using the built-in camera with integrated Google search
Sans MOTOBLUR, sans Verizon UI (rejoice?)
Colors: black, titanium

Verizon announces HTC Imagio, Nokia 2705 Shade, Motorola Barrage and more

Today, Verizon Wireless has announced no less than four new phones, as well as a netbook.

The most important new phone is, of course, the HTC Imagio, which is actually a smartphone that will come with Windows Mobile 6.5.

Verizon will sell the Imagio online starting October 6, and in retail locations starting October 20. The handset’s price is of $199.99 with a 2-yr contract agreement and after a $100 rebate.

For that money, you get the following features: 3.6 inch WVGA touchscreen display, TouchFlo 3D, HSDPA and EV-DO Rev. A connectivity, Wi-Fi, 3.5mm headset jack, 5MP autofocus camera, and V CAST Mobile TV (this service costs $15 per month).

Next we have the Nokia 2705 Shade, a clamshell touted as “one of the smallest phones to be offered by Verizon.”

Nokia 2705 Shade has internal and external displays, 1.3MP camera, Bluetooth, micro USB and a battery that can provide a talk-time of up to 5 hours. The phone will be available on October 6, in two versions (with or without camera), and users will be able to buy Xpress-on color covers for it. As for the price, Verizon asks only $29.99 for the 2705 Shade (with a 2-yr agreement).

The third new phone from Verizon, Motorola Barrage V860, is also a clamshell – but a rugged one that’s shock, vibration, water and humidity resistant.

The features of Motorola Barrage include: push-to-talk, VZ Navigator, 2MP camera and a 1170 mAh battery. The Barrage is available at Verizon starting today, for $129.99 with a 2-yr agreement and after a $50 mail-in rebate. There will also be a cameraless version, launched on October 21.

Verizon Razzle is the fourth new phone. As previously reported, this is a candybar with a QWERTY keyboard that swivels to unveil dedicated music controls. Other features include a 2.2 inch QVGA display, VZ Navigator, Bluetooth, 1.3MP camera and a 1GB card.

Verizon Razzle costs $69.99 on contract. It will be available starting October 6.

And finally we have the Gateway LT2016u – a new netbook with Windows XP, 3G connectivity, Wi-Fi, 10.1-inch WSVGA display, Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz processor, 1GB DDR2, and a 160GB hard drive.

Verizon will offer the Gateway LT2016u netbook starting October 4, for $149.99 with a 2-yr agreement and after a $100 mail-in rebate.

Motorola Tao (Sholes) live photos, Android obviously included

Verizon’s Android-powered Motorola Tao (also known as Motorola Sholes) has recently appeared in a set of live photos, which means that it might be officially announced soon.

Spotted over at Howard Forums, the Motorola Tao is presented as being bigger than the LG Dare, although it’s quite slim. The handset’s case is made out of metal, and its hardware QWERTY keyboard is, apparently, “like a HTC one.”

The rumored features of Tao / Sholes include Android 2.0, 3.7 inch touchscreen display with 854 x 480 pixels, 3.5mm headset jack and a 5MP camera (the camera is confirmed by one of the photos below).

Regardless of its name, a new Moto Android smartphone will definitely be announced soon, since Motorola said so when it unveiled the Motorola Cliq / Dext. Let’s hope the device will be as awesome as it seems to be at the moment.

Motorola Ruby lives, now it’s called V13

Remember the Motorola Ruby clamshell, first rumored to be canceled and then reappeared in some press photos? Well, it looks like the phone will be released by Moto after all, under the name of Motorola V13 (not VE1, as previously believed).

The Ruby / V13 has been approved by the Bluetooth SIG yesterday, which means that Moto did not cancel it.

The specs listed by the Bluetooth SIG coincide with the ones we knew about, including: 2.2 inch QVGA internal display, 2 inch QVGA external touchscreen display, CDMA/Ev-Do connectivity, Bluetooth and 5MP camera with autofocus and flash.

Unfortunately, we still don’t know when the Ruby / V13 will be officially announced.

Remember the Motorola VE440 candybar? It was just announced by MetroPCS, and it should be available for purchase right away.

The new phone has some interesting features, including music-oriented ones like: 3.5mm headset jack, stereo Bluetooth and external music controls.

The VE440’s other specs are: 1.9 inch TFT display with 176 x 220 pixels and 65K colors, GPS, 1.3MP camera, MetroPCS ChatLINK, MicroSD card support (up to 8GB) and a 940 mAh battery (for up to 280 minutes of talk time).

MetroPCS sells the Motorola VE440 for $129 – obviously without a contract agreement.

Not long after the Samsung Omnia II i920, another unannounced phone for Verizon has showed up: the Motorola Barrage V860.

Unlike the Omnia II, the Motorola Barrage is a rugged, push-to-talk clamshell phone.

It will come in two versions: with and without a 2MP camera. Other specs include external music controls, GPS, 2.5mm headset jack and MicroSD card support.

No word yet on when Verizon will launch the V860, and neither for what price (it will probably be a bit more expensive than the recently-launched Motorola Entice W766).

We’d venture to guess that Motorola is doing a great job in generating intrigue and interest in its CLIQ Android handset that’s set to release mid-October, because we here at UV are definitely feeling intrigued.

The Android OS is still so new and fresh to most people that any little piece of information like this will help generate extra buzz. If there’s one thing we’ve learned from the popularity of the iPhone, it’s that people love apps. In this world of touchscreen phones, apps rule.

The latest discovery comes from an official Motorola CLIQ site listing off a massive number of various apps that will be featured. Check out the link to see the entire list, but we’ll touch upon some of our favs.

Mint – For keeping track of your finances
Yahoo Mail – Interesting it has its own app on a Google OS
Digg – We’re intrigued on how this will look and feel as its own app
Lifestyle apps – Including Gizmodo and Lifehacker, amongst others
Quickoffice – The same app costs upwards of $12.99 on the iPhone, but Moto is including it for free

There are quite a few others that we aren’t listing here. My question is, if you don’t want all of these apps on your phone will you be able to delete them? Or will they be like the preloaded iPhone apps that can’t be deleted?

Which apps are most appealing to you? And more importantly, should all these apps become standard for all Android phones?

Earlier this month, we saw the Motorola Entice W766 making an appearance at Moto’s official website, and now the phone is finally available for purchase through Verizon Wireless.

Coming as the successor of Moto W755 (which is now free at Verizon), the Motorola Entice W766 is an entry-level clamshell presented as being “uncomplicated and uncompromising.”

The W766 features a 2.2 inch internal display with 176 x 220 pixels, external music controls, VZ Navigator, Web browser, email, stereo Bluetooth, 2MP camera, 35MB of internal memory and MicroSD card support.

Orange UK confirms: Motorola Dext comes in October, free on contract

Last week’s rumor regarding Motorola Dext’s arrival to the UK in early October has been confirmed today by Orange, which will indeed launch the Android smartphone next month.

Offered to UK customers exclusively via Orange, the Motorola Dext will be sold even for free to customers who choose a 2-yr contract agreement and a data plan of at least £34.26 ($56.5) per month.

As you probably already know, Motorola Dext is Moto’s first Android device and it’s similar to the Motorola Cliq, which will be soon released in the US by T-Mobile.

The Dext features Android OS 1.5, the MotoBlur UI, 3 inch HVGA touchscreen display, HSDPA connectivity, HTML browsing, Wi-Fi, GPS, 5MP camera, and a full QWERTY keyboard.

Good news for non-T-Mobile USA customers who like the Motorola Cliq and think that they’ll never get it without switching carriers: they may actually be able to buy it from their operator.

According to The Wall Street Journal, which quotes Motorola’s Co-CEO Sanjay Jha, the giant phone maker is “in talks with all large operators in U.S.” for selling the Cliq. Even more, Mr. Jha is “fairly hopeful” they will reach agreements with said operators.

Although the carriers were not mentioned, it’s almost certainly that Moto’s official was talking about AT&T, Sprint and maybe Verizon too – though Verizon will probably get the Sholes only.

Other operators aside, the Motorola Cliq will be first launched by T-Mobile in the US, sometime before the holiday season. The Android smartphone (which uses the brand new MotoBlur UI) will also be available around the world, as Motorola Dext – for example, Orange UK may sell the Dext starting October.

A new Motorola touchscreen phone has recently appeared o the Web and, although it’s not officially announced, we know most of its important features.

The phone is Motorola E11, a touchscreen handset that only supports dual-band GSM/GPRS connectivity (900/1800 MHz) – which probably means that it’s destined for China and other emerging markets.

As you can see in the image below, the Moto E11 is different from the ROKR phone we previously though it may be called like this.

Motorola has silently made the Entice W766 phone official, but with all the buzz around the Android-powered Cliq / Dext, probably no one has noticed.

Previously known as Motorola Harmony W766, the Entice is a simple clamshell that provides “one touch access to your favorite functions.”

The new phone comes with CDMA 800/1900 1X/EVDO connectivity and it will be launched in the US exclusively via Verizon Wireless – Sprint might get it too, but probably under a different name.

Motorola Dext to bring Android to Orange UK in October

When Motorola officially announced the Moto Cliq / Dext, it said that the new Android smartphone would be available in the fourth quarter of the year. That could be anywhere between October and December.

It looks like Orange UK’s customers are quite lucky, as Moto UK mentions that the Dext “will be available from early October.”

Starting September 22, you’ll even be able to pre-order the smartphone in Orange’s stores, or pre-register online.

Coming as the non-US version of Cliq, Motorola Dext features the new MotoBlur interface, a 3.1 inch HVGA touchscreen display, full QWERTY keyboard, Wi-Fi, HSDPA, GPS, 5MP autofocus camera, 3.5mm headset jack, and a 2GB card in the box.

As reported earlier today, the price of Motorola Dext may be about €150, but that remains to be seen.

Announced yesterday as Motorola Cliq for T-Mobile USA and Motorola Dext for the rest of the world, Moto’s first Android smartphone is definitely one of the company’s most interesting devices in the last few years.

Initially known as Motorola Morrison, the Cliq / Dext is a touchscreen handset with a full QWERTY keyboard and almost any feature you’d want from a modern smartphone, including 3G, GPS, Wi-Fi , 3.5mm headset jack and a 5MP autofocus camera.

The phone uses MotoBlur, a customized Android UI that syncs all your contacts and provides quick access to social networking services.

A preview of the Motorola Cliq / Dext has just appeared over at Mobile-review. The general impression is that the smartphone is a really nice one.

The MotoBlur UI (which requires you to create an account) works well, the touchscreen display is “good” and responsive, while the QWERTY keyboard is “quite handy”.

Motorola hasn’t announced the price of its first Android smartphone, but it looks like it’s going to be a pretty low one.

Eldar Murtazin says that the Moto Dext will cost about €150 ($220) unsubsidized, and €1 on contract, while T-Mobile’s Moto Cliq is rumored to be $400 without contract, and free with. Of course, we can’t know for sure how much the Cliq / Dext will cost until something official comes up
