Remember Nokia N99 phone of your dreams? You know, the one with Photoshopped picture and fantastic specs – 16 GB of internal flash memory, 16:9 3.2″ wide screen, GPS. Wi-Fi, 8 mpx camera and other goodies.

Well, when we almost convinced ourselves that this Nokia N99 was a work of overeager Nokia fan, along comes Engadget and drops this picture on us:

While Engadget says that this is the picture of the successor to Nokia N800 Internet tablet (Nokia N900?), it looks pretty similar to the original photoshop drawing of Nokia N99.

Looking at the live pictures of Nokia N99/N900 it seems that original picture could really have been made by some Nokia designer in the early stages of design concept for the new device.

The current pictures of Nokia N900/N99 device also seem to be an early prototype and do not reveal too many details about the new Nokia multimedia computer. Nokia N99/N900 will obviously have a full QWERTY keyboard and the camera with a flash is now built-in at the front of the device.

What’s interesting about this prototype of Nokia N900/N99 is the total absence of any controls on the front surface. Since it seems to be pretty inconvenient to use slider keyboard everytime you want to surf the net or listen to music, it may be an indication of significantly improved touch interface.

Still we don’t even know whether the pictures here are real and all the rest is a pure speculation on my part.

But Nokia has hinted that it is working on some new type of mobile device for next year. So if this one’s real, if Nokia will manage make a good touch interface and if Nokia N99/N900 comes anywhere near the originally indicated specs, it will give Apple’s iPhone, HTC Omni and any other future competitor a real run for the money.

Still, with all the good things that is crammed inside Nokia N95 multimedia computer, I think I can live with that.

I mean, c’mon. I will have 5 mpx digital camera, GPS navigator, mp3 player, 30 fps MP4 player and video camera in one place. And that’s in addition to 3.5 G HSDPA phone with Wi-Fi!

As long as Nokia N95 is not a real brick, I think I’ll take it.

Recent patent filing shows that Nokia is indeed working on a slider phone with QWERTY keyboard and numeracial keyboard:

As you can see, the sketch in patent application is very similar to the image of Nokia N99 we have seen earlier:

Could this really be Nokia N99?

To remind you, the claimed specs for it were:

9 way front joystick button, 16GB FLASH internal memory, up to 4GB mini SD slot, 16:9 3.2″ wide screen, GPS, MP3, DIVX XVID MPEG AVI video reading, WLAN WIFI, qwerty pad, 8MP camera, 3CCD 720 pixel wide 30fps video capture.

Sure, some of the specs, like 3CCD imaging system and amount of internal memory sounds pretty out there. But if you think of where the smart phones will be in a year or two, they are not that far fetched.

We already have 32GB NAND Drives, 10 megapixel camera in Samsung B600 and 800 x 320px screen in Nokia E90 Communicator. Why not put all of it into a one cool phone?

If the picture below are real, looks like Nokia took a page out of HTC book and created a phone with sliding-out QWERTY keyboard – Nokia N99:

Nothing official of course, it was submitted by e-mail to Mobile Diva Darla Mack, probably by an eager fan from Nokia labs

Nokia Nseries N99 multimedia computer supposedly will have:

9 way front joystick button, 16GB FLASH internal memory, up to 4GB mini SD slot, 16:9 3.2″ wide screen, GPS, MP3, DIVX XVID MPEG AVI video reading, WLAN WIFI, qwerty pad, 8MP camera, 3CCD 720 pixel wide 30fps video capture.

Now, if these specs would be true, I think Nokia N99 would be the first NSeries cellphone to truly justify the name of “multimedia computer”. But judging from the number (N99), it will be some time until this beauty comes out. We should see Nseries N97 yet.

Finally! A really thin Nokia NSeries phone – Nokia N76. And in beautiful red too. Why couldn’t they release Nokia N76 NSeries multimedia computer/cellphone for this Christmas? I already got my girlfriend Samsung D830.

Really. I have been eying Nokia NSeries cellphones for a while now. Each one released has a bunch of features that I would really like to have in my new cellphone.

I’ve been looking for a this perfect new Nseries multimedia computer to replace my Nokia 6070 for four months now. There’s been several times now that I ‘m in mobile phone shop and almost ready to buy one. But then I look at Samsung D900 or MotoKRZR and compare it to Nokia N93 or N91 and somehow somehow I’m unable to pull the trigger.

Yes. NSeries have Carl Zeiss optics, yes there’s DVD quality 30 fps camcoder there and 5 megapixel camera, yes they’ve got 8GB HDD and there’s Wi-Fi connectivity to boot. But in each of the Nseries phones there’s this one “must have feature” missing. Sometimes it’s Wi-Fi, sometimes it’s camera quality, or storage capacity, or something else. And when I think that I will be carrying this “brick” in my pocket for next couple of years…

And now there is Nokia N76. Granted, feature wise Nokia N76 is no match for the more advanced NSeries phones like N93i, or N95. No HDD or DVD quality camera. No fancy maps and GPS Navigation. No HSDPA, UMA of Wi-Fi connectivity. But when I really think about it, Nokia N76 seems just good enough for most of my needs:

Connectivity. Nokia N76 is a dual-mode WCDMA2100/EGSM850/900/1800/1900 MHz or EDGE EGSM850/900/1800/1900 MHz phone. So it will work almost anywhere I travel. And while I won’t be downloading P2P movies on it via 3.5 Mbps HSDPA networks, the Edge connectivity should be enough for some browsing, Skyping and occasional e-mail checks.

Imaging. I won’t be taking print quality pictures with 2 megapixel camera and I won’t be shooting world class movies with 15 fps video camera, but from what I’ve seen on other 2 Mpx Nseries phones the actual photo quality is quite good. Hey, I remember that few years ago 2 Mpx was a cutting edge for most consumer digital cameras and nobody was complaining much about picture quality then. Nokia N76 has got dedicated camera keys, so it’s easy to point and shoot and that seals the deal on this front for me. If I want better quality pictures I can still use my digicam.

Music. Again. It’s no iPod, but Nokia music software on Nseries phones is quite good, Nokia N76 has dedicated music keys and 2 GB of storage via MicroSD card will hold hold most of the podcasts and music I will need occasionally.

External Applications. Nokia N76 is a Series 60 phone so there will be no shortage of external apps I want to run on it. It’s also got Amazon and Yahoo! Go services integration, so I can check my e-mails, quotes IM friends whenever I like. And I can always switch to Google if I feel like it.Internal Apps. Well, first there’s a Nokia LifeBlog. I can say that this is one of the main reasons I don’t want to switch to any other phone brand. Nokia LifeBlog records all my SMS and pictures and other things automatically to help me remember the things I did when, I feel like it, or need to check something. Actually I can still check on the things I did in the beginning of 2005. And that’s with my old Nokia 6070 and 64 MB micro MMC card. What with 2GB micro SD and
seamless PC synchronization, I can safely assume that I’ll have my diary safe and complete as of 2005 and onwards for years and years.

The seamless PC synchronization, thanks to SyncML, applies to all my Outlook Calendar entries, e-mails, to-do lists and other data too, so I can have all the info I need even when my laptop is not around. And also through GPRS or Edge networks I can always do my e-mail on Nokia N76 via SMTP, IMAP4 and POP3).

All in all Nokia N76 cellphone is a rather basic Nseries cellphone. It’s music, camera are data features are are nothing to brag about for a Nseries multimedia computer. But they are just good enough for most things you’ll ever need on the phone.

And Nokia N76 is a REAL cellphone, not a computer. And it’s definetely not a brick. Nokia N76 looks and feels like a phone and it has a great design too. It’s easy to carry around and fit it in your pocket. And feature wise Nokia N76 still beats most of the other brand name competition on the market.

Nokia Nseries multimedia computers always dazzled us with their features – huge memory capacity, music players, great cameras, Wi-Fi, TV streaming, camcorders… you name it, they’ve got it. The only problem with these multimedia cellphones was their size – to pack all the features Nokia Nseries cellphones were pretty bulky. Not any more.

With the release of Nokia N75 Nseries multimedia computer the bulkiness is not a problem. Measuring at 95 mm (H) x 52 mm (W) x 20.2 mm (T) this phone is pretty small. And it’s almost got it all:

Nokia N75 is a Quadband GSM and WCDMA phone, so you can connect to almost any any network anywhere in the world with it. It has two bright color screens – the main 2.4â€? QVGA (240 x 320 pixels) color display with 16M colors with ambient light detector and 1.36â€? color display (160×128) 262K color cover display with full Series 60 user interface capabilities, dedicated camera and music keys.

Being true to it’s multimedia category Nokia N75 comes with 2 megapixel camera, 15 FPS video recording capabilities at QCIF (176×144), CIF (352×288) resolutions, mpeg4 video player, music player for all popular audio formats, stereo FM radio, steros 3D hands free speakers and Nokia Stereo Headset HS-28.

For a business user Nokia N75 can offer e-mail access through SMTP, POP3 and IMAP4 with the ability to view Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, PDF, ZIP attachments. As any other Nseries phone it has powerfull synchronization capabilities through SyncML and is able to synhronize data with major PC applications such as Microsoft Outlook (98, 2000, 2002, 2003), Outlook Express, Lotus Organizer (5.0, 6.0), Lotus Notes (5.0, 6.0).

To store all those photos, video, audio and data files Nokia N75 packs plenty of storage room. It comes with 60 MB on-board free user memory, Hot swap MicroSD card, up to 2GB and up to 40 Mbytes internal dynamic memory.

All-in-all Nokia N75 Nseries cellphone/multimedia computer looks like a great choice. The only thing missing is WLAN capability. Oh well, nobody’s perfect, as they say, so Bluetooth and USB will have to do for now…

Now things might be changing. Only a few weeks after the introduction of new Nokia Nseries N72, N73 and N93 handsets at the Open Studio presentation in Berlin, these Nokia mobile phones/multimedia computers are showing up on FCC website. Yesterday Nokia Nseries N93 cellphone/camcoder was approved by FCC.

Quick look at the photos and browse through users manual at FCC site confirms that this is indeed the same phone that was presented in Berlin. Nseries Nokia N93 will come 3.2 megapixel camera, 30fps video capture, WLAN, mp3 player, lots of memory and other cool features we reported earlier. Some new features that we missed during the introduction:

TV out port for easy connection to external TV sets and projectors
Sequence mode of up to 6 pictures for still camera
Camera self timer

New Nseries Nokia N83 photos has leaked onto Mobiholics forums. Nokia N93 is rumored to be a quad band slider cellphone with Carl Zeiss optics 5 megapixel camera. It will have mechanical shutter, flash and autofocus.

In addition to excellent cameraphone Nokia N83 will double as a great musicphone with specialized music player software and controls, AM/FM radio, standard 3.5mm headphone jack, MP3/ACC file playback and 4 GB micro hard drive to store all your pictures and music. And if 4GB is not enough you can add additional 2 Gigs into hot swappable MicroSD card slot.

Connectivity features are also very impressive. Nseries Nokia N83 is a quad band mobile phone with additional Bluetooth and Wi-Fi b/g, connectivity options and USB port for easy connection and synchronization with your PC.

And to confirm the rumors, Finnish cellphone maker demanded the removal of Nseries Nokia N83 the pictures from Mobiholics forums.

As we reported yesterday, Nokia has announced a number of new Nseries cellphones/multimedia computers. One of them was high end Nokia N93 mobile phone with integrated camcorder capability. Today we got a chance to have a closer look at it and we weren’t disappointed. 3.2 megapixel camera, Carl Zeiss otpics with 3x optical zoom, MPEG-4 VGA playback and capture of up to 30 fps, integrated music player, FM radio and Wi-Fi makes this handset one of our favorites. We have only 2 problems with Nseries N93 cell phone:

First, it is bulky. In a perfect world you would have had all the features of Nseries Nokia N93 in a form factor of Samsung SCH-V870. But it isn’t a perfect world…yet. So now you will have to choose what you prefer – ordinary slim cell phone or feature packed mobile camcorder-music-video-player-game-console phone.

And second, where’s the TV function? C’mon Nokia, why do I have to choose – mobile TV or mobile camcorder? I want both! Well, I guess it might have been tricky to pack everything even into such a bulky phone. So we will have to wait until the components get even smaller.

In April of last year Nokia introduced Nseries – a new category line of mobile phones/multimedia computers As the category description suggests Nseries devices are much more then a mobile phones. Depending on particular model, these multimedia computers come with the ability to shoot video and still pictures, print-quality images, watch TV, listen to music, and access the web and e-mail. Various Nseries multimedia computers also come equipped with various forms of non-cellular connectivity like WLAN, FM radio, Digital Video Broadcasting and Bluetooth.

So far Nokia has released or announced 6 different Nseries models – N70, N71, N80, N90, N91 and N92. Today we will look at first three of them.

Nokia N70 cameraphone is quite similar to the Sony Ericsson Cybershot handset line. It is a lower end Nseries cellphone and comes with 2 megapixel camera and 20x digital zoom. This candy bar shaped mobile phone easily transforms into a digital camera: in horizontal position your phone screen becomes a viewfinder and you can just point and shoot pictures with dedicated shutter key. Nokia XpressPrint software allows you to print directly from a phone via USB 2.0 or Bluetooth. Nokia N70 also comes with second VGA camera, built in FM radio and MP3 player and has a Hot Swap MMC card slot for your media storage.

Nokia N71 3G clamshell cell phone is direct competitor to lower end Sony Ericsson’s Walkman phones. This media centric mobile phone comes with dedicated music and video player, playlist support and specially assigned keys for easy music access. Nokia N71 is able to decode a wide variety of media files, including MP3, AAC, Real Audio, WAV, Nokia Ring Tones, AMR, AMR-WB, AMR-NB, AU, MIDI, H.263, JPEG, JPEG2000, EXIF 2.2, GIF 87/89, PNG, BMP (W-BMP), MBM, MPEG-4 and eAAC+ . It also has Hot Swap miniSD card reader expandable to up to 2GB of memory. Nokia N71 multimedia computer comes with 2 cameras (2 megapixel camera with built-in flash and VGA camera), FM ratio tuner and expanded data transfer capabilities.

Nokia N80 slider cellphone is one of Nokia’s most advanced all-in-one’s yet. This Nseries quadband (EDGE/GSM 850/900/1800/1900 + WCDMA 1900 or 2100 MHz) mobile phone comes with 3 megapixel camera and WLAN (Wi-Fi) connectivity. Nokia N80 also has Hot Swap, expandable to 2GB miniSD card slot. With integrated music and video player, FM radio, dedicated e-mail application, enhanced Web browser and MS Office document viewers this multimedia computer seamlessly blends personal entertainment with mobile business needs.

LifeBlog application is one of more interesting features of currently available Nokia smartphones running series 60 software. It automatically records and builds a diary as you take pictures, shoot videos and send text or multimedia messages on your cellphone. Then if you have Nokia LifeBlog installed on your PC, you can download everything there to free up phones memory and have a well organized personal diary archive.

Today Nokia LifeBlog got a boost with the release of version 2 software. Available exclusively on Nokia Nseries Multimedia Computers (a fancy name for Nseries phones:) ) Nokia Lifeblog 2.0 adds some pretty cool new features. As with previous versions of software, you will still be able to create a rich personal multimedia diary, with photos, video clips, messages and text notes organized in chronological manner. But now you can add audio notes as well as other valuable context information, such as calendar entries and location information to the mix, providing some more background to the pictures and videos stored on the phone.

According to Nokia “…with the new Nokia Lifeblog, your Nokia Nseries device can be set to immediately link your photos to information about your location, your calendar entries, and even what time it was. For example, if you used the calendar on your Nokia Nseries device to input an entry for CeBIT, photos taken during that time will be tagged with this information from your calendar, making them easier to find in the future.

PC application is available now and can be downloaded from http://www.nokia.com/lifeblog . The new mobile software, which is compatible with all Nokia Nseries devices, is expected to become available for free download from the end of April 2006.
