AT&T’s Pantech Element and Burst with LTE available now

Pantech’s newest Android devices made for AT&T – the Element tablet and the Burst smartphone – are now available for purchase, and you can get them either separately, or bundled (which will let you save $100).

The Pantech Element costs $299.99 on contract, and is an Android 3.2 Honeycomb tablet packed in a splash-proof case. It features an 8 inch display with 1024 x 768 pixels, LTE connectivity, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, HDMI, 5MP rear camera, 2MP front-facing camera, 1GB of RAM, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 16GB of internal memory, MicroSD card support, and a 6400 mAh battery.

You can go here to buy the Pantech Element right away.

The Pantech Burst runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and features a 4 inch WVGA AMOLED display, LTE, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth 3.0, 5MP rear camera, front-facing camera, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, and a 1650 mAh battery. The Burst is available here in Titanium and Ruby Red, for $49.99 on contract.

Customers who buy the Pantech Element bundled with the Pantech Burst will pay just $249.99 for them (but you’ll have to sign a new contract for each).

AT&T’s pre-CES announcement was rounded up nicely with a couple of affordable Android smartphones and a new (and slightly unique) Android tablet. So the carrier made sure that it has a little bit of everything for everyone. All three devices in this post support 4G LTE, which is further proof that AT&T is going all in with the next-gen network. Verizon may have had a head start in deploying LTE in the USA, but AT&T looks like it’s planning to catch up quickly, both in terms of network availability, as well as device range. And up until now at least, it has priced its LTE gear a bit lower than Verizon.

The Samsung Exhilarate (which you can see above) is the first affordable Android smartphone we’ll talk about. This will aim to bring LTE to the masses, so to speak, with its price point under $50 (which we’re guessing means $49.99 – on a two-year contract, of course). The Exhilarate will become available in the coming months (whatever that means), and has some neat ‘green’ credentials, being built to meet many environmental and sustainability standards. It will be made of 80% recycled post-consumer materials, and will come with a 4-inch touchscreen, and two cameras. It will have Eco modes and tools such as an Eco calendar and calculator (again, whatever that may mean). No further details though, so we’re left guessing the remainder of the specs as well as an actual release date.

Next up, we have the Pantech Burst (image above). Also a cheap smartphone, this runs Android and will become available on January 22. Its price will be $49.99 with a new two-year contract. The Pantech Burst will have a 4-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen, a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 16 GB of built-in storage, and two cameras (of which the rear one will do 720p HD video recording). It will be out in titanium or ruby red, and it runs Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread.

Last, but not least, is the Pantech Element (seen below), a tablet we’ve heard about a couple of times before (in fact it’s the only device of these three that has been leaked before). Its unique selling point is that it’s splash-proof. So while you shouldn’t immerse it in water, it will put up with the occasional splash without any issues (with all ports closed, mind). The Element also has a size not commonly seen on tablets – its screen is an 8-inch unit.

The Pantech Element has a dual-core 1.5 GHz processor, a 5 MP rear camera, a 2 MP front-facing camera, 16 GB of storage, and it runs Android 3.2 Honeycomb. It will also be in stores on January 22, just like we heard a few hours ago. The price will be $299.99 with a new two-year contract.

That said, for a limited time you’ll be able to get both the Pantech Element and the Pantech Burst for just $249.99. You will need to sign two-year service agreements with the carrier, naturally, but that’s a good price to pay for both a tablet and a smartphone in this day and age. Especially because neither is underpowered or anything like that.

The Pantech Element is an 8-inch Android tablet that’s going to become available at AT&T shortly. We’ve first shown it to you a few days ago, and now it’s already up for pre-order it seems.

According to Engadget, you can just pop into your local AT&T store and pre-order one of these puppies. The price? $300 with a new two-year data contract, or $450 without. Unfortunately, online pre-orders aren’t available just yet, but it’s probably only a matter of time before they will be.

If you do pre-order this splash-resistant tablet, you can expect it to be in your hands on January 22. That’s later than the originally anticipated January 8 release date (no, that didn’t happen), but perhaps the previous rumor got the pre-order start date and the shipping date mixed up. We’ll never know.

Remember that 8-inch Pantech tablet we showed you right before the end of 2011? We thought it was headed to AT&T with LTE support, and indeed it is. It’s just that it will be out sooner than we expected.

It’s called the Pantech Element. It’s waterproof (to the extent of the IP57 spec, which basically means it’s splash-resistant if all ports are closed). It runs Android 3.2 Honeycomb. It has a dual-core 1.5 GHz processor, 16 GB of built-in storage space, a 5 MP rear camera with 1080p HD video recording, a 2 MP front-facing camera with 720p HD video, and 4G LTE support.

The Pantech Element will arrive in AT&T stores on January 8, and it will cost $299.99 with a new two-year contract, or $449.99 without a contract. This is shaping up to be quite an interesting contender in the tablet space, since it’s rather affordable on contract and has decent specs. Of course it would have been even better were it running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but perhaps an update to the latest OS version isn’t out of the question.

All the following prices are only valid if you sign a new two-year contract, in case you were wondering.

Verizon, for example, will give you a Motorola Droid Bionic for $199.99, or the midrange Pantech Breakout for just $49.99. And the carrier’s ’2x data’ promotion is still going, so if you sign up for a data plan (which you must in order to get these smartphones anyway), you’ll get double the ‘advertised’ data traffic each month.

Pantech P9070 hits FCC with AT&T LTE

Pantech has been busy lately planning its next devices to hit the US mobile market. Earlier this week we saw the Pantech P4100 tablet arrive at the FCC with the AT&T LTE radio bands(4 and 17) along with the typical 850 / 1900 WCDMA bands.

The P9070 also hit the FCC with the same LTE radios as the P4100. Not much else is known about the device except for the diagram that is shown in the application. This device could possibly make its debut at CES 2012.

This device could very likely hit AT&T along with the P4100 tablet due to AT&T’s recent good relationship with Pantech. We will keep you updated on the status of the P9070.

Today is another Sunday when AT&T is launching multiple devices – five of them to be exact: a Windows Phone Mango handset, an Android tablet, and three Android smartphones.

AT&T’s new Mango phone is, of course, the HTC Titan, which comes not long after the Samsung Focus S and Samsung Focus Flash (the carrier’s very first Mango products).

Featuring a 4.7 inch WVGA display, the HTC Titan is the largest Windows Phone handset ever. It can be bought at AT&T for $199.99 on contract (or $549.99 without contract) or you can get it on Amazon (currently going for $.01).

The new Android tablet that AT&T is offering (online here) is the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9. You can get it for a hefty $479.99 on contract, or $629.99 without commitment. The Galaxy Tab 8.9 runs Android 3.2 Honeycomb, and features LTE connectivity – alongside all the other features you can find in the Tab 8.9 that’s also available in Europe.

As for AT&T’s three Android smartphones that went on sale today, these are: Samsung Captivate Glide ($149.99 on contract on the official site, but $.01 on Amazon), Samsung Doubletime ($49.99 officially and $.01 on Amazon), and Pantech Pocket (also $49.99 at AT&T, $.01 on Amazon).

Last month AT&T introduced five new Android smartphones, one of which was the Pantech Pocket. This is a square smartphone that comes with a rather unusual 4:3 aspect ratio and Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

A few days ago, the carrier let us know that the Pantech Pocket would finally be available on November 20, although at what price remained a mystery.

Not anymore, since AT&T has just put out a press release that contains that important information. The Pantech Pocket will be yours if you agree to part with $49.99 come November 20. You’ll need to sign a new two-year contract to get it at that price, of course.

The Pantech Pocket has a 4-inch SVGA touchscreen, a 5 MP camera, scratch-resistant casing, and an extra-large battery. It will be an interesting niche device in a world filled with near-identical offerings, and since it’s aimed at those getting their first smartphone, might even sell well. We’ll see.

About a month ago, AT&T decided to unveil no less than five new Android-powered smartphones. The Motorola Atrix 2 was undoubtedly the leader of that pack, so the carrier gave us its pricing info and release date back then. However, we were left wondering when the other devices would launch. And while it’s still unclear what happened to the AT&T Avail (made by ZTE), we now know when the Samsung Doubletime, Samsung Captivate Glide, and Pantech Pocket will be out in an AT&T store near you.

The carrier itself took to Twitter to announce the news. The Doubletime, Captivate Glide, and Pocket will all be hitting the streets on November 20. Unfortunately, we still don’t know how they will be priced, although judging by their specs, none of them should be very expensive if AT&T wants sales to go well (except the Captivate Glide perhaps, which would have been a flagship device at the beginning of this year).

The Pantech Pocket was expected to go on sale on November 6, so that’s a two-week delay for you right there. Yet somehow we doubt that many of you have been losing any sleep over this. Anyway, in six short days, AT&T will have three more Android smartphones for you to choose from.

Ultra thin Pantech Hotshot announced by Verizon

Verizon Wireless has announced yet another new Pantech phone – not long after introducing the Pantech Breakout with Android, and the Jest 2 QWERTY handset. The new phone is called Pantech Hotshot, and is one of the thinnest feature phones on the market (0.35 inches – 8.9mm).

The Hotshot is far from being a high-end device. Its features include a 3.2 inch touchscreen display of unknown resolution (probably HVGA), three customizable homescreens, Opera Mini, VZ Navigator, V CAST Video, V CAST Tones, Bluetooth, 3.2MP camera, and a 2GB memory card pre-installed.

Verizon will sell the Pantech Hotshot starting October 6 for $99.99 on contract (after a $50 mail-in rebate). That’s a lot of money or a handset which stands out only for its thinness. For $99.99 you could buy the aforementioned Pantech Breakout – a smartphone with more advanced features (including a WVGA display and LTE support).

Pantech Jest 2 – new global phone for Verizon

Verizon Wireless has introduced a new feature phone: the Pantech Jest 2, which comes to replace the original Jest (currently out of stock on the carrier’s website).

The new Pantech Jest 2 doesn’t look too different from the first model. Its biggest selling point is the support for quad-band GSM connectivity, which will allow users to “enjoy wireless voice and data service in more than 200 countries.”

The handset features a 2.4 inch landscape display (non-touchscreen), sliding QWERTY keyboard, Opera Mini browser, VZ Navigator, V CAST Tones, 3.5mm headset jack, Bluetooth, 2MP camera, and MicroSD card support (up to 32GB).

Verizon will sell the Pantech Jest 2 starting September 29 for $79.99 after a$50 mail-in rebate (new 2-yr contract agreement required).

We’ve known that Verizon plans on adding an affordable smartphone with 4G LTE connectivity to its roster ever since last month. And after a few leaks here and there, Big Red finally decided to make the Pantech Breakout official a few days ago.

Today is Thursday, which is Verizon’s favorite day for releasing new phones. So that can only mean one thing. Indeed, the Pantech Breakout can now be purchased from the carrier for $99.99.

To get the device for that much, you’ll need to sign a new two-year contract. If you get the handset online, overnight shipping is free.

The Pantech Breakout then turns out to be, as we expected, Verizon’s cheapest 4G LTE smartphone to date. Verizon has finally acknowledged the existence of the LTE-capable Pantech Breakout, a handset that we’ve seen quite a few times until now. The largest US mobile carrier has announced that the Breakout would be available starting September 22 (this Thursday) for $99 on contract after a $50 mail-in rebate – thus becoming the cheapest 4G phone on Verizon.

The Breakout runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread and offers a 4. inch WVGA display, “custom Pantech widgets”, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, DLNA, GPS, Bluetooth 3.0, 5MP rear camera with 720p video recording, VGA front-facing camera, 1GHz processor, and an 8GB memory card pre-installed.

The Pantech Breakout will be Verizon’s fifth 4G LTE handset, after the HTC Thunderbolt, LG Revolution, Samsung Droid Charge, and Motorola Droid Bionic.

Verizon’s Pantech Breakout gets photographed out and about

The Pantech Breakout will probably be Verizon’s most affordable 4G LTE phone to date. We’re expecting its price to be one of its main features, considering that, while it is a pretty decent Android smartphone, it’s in no way a high-end offering with its single-core 1 GHz processor, 5 MP camera, and 4-inch WVGA touchscreen.

Yesterday we heard a rumor that it was going to be released by Big Red on September 22 (so next Thursday). While we still can’t confirm that, new signs are indeed pointing to a launch happening very soon.

Apparently Pantech Breakout units have already started arriving at Verizon stores, and one of them had the courtesy of having its picture taken while out of the box. You can see it in all its glory in the image above.

Unfortunately, that’s it for now. At this point we have no other new information about the Breakout, but stay tuned. You’ll know more when we do.

Being able to surf the Web at 4G LTE speeds on your smartphone is nice and all, but not everyone has $300 lying around to buy one of Verizon’s current 4G LTE-enabled devices. For those who’d like to get some LTE love but simply can’t afford the high-end handsets that Big Red has offered so far, this should be interesting.

The Pantech Breakout will probably be Verizon’s first affordable 4G LTE smartphone. However, do read that as ‘more affordable than other 4G LTE devices’ and not ‘affordable as in free’. The thing is that we don’t know anything about its pricing yet, but its specs certainly suggest that it’s going to be the most affordable 4G LTE phone that Verizon has sold so far.

We’ll find out soon enough. According to the leaked image you can see above, the Pantech Breakout is due to be released by Verizon on September 22, so exactly one week from now. Alongside the shipping info was the full spec list, so here’s a refresher on what the Breakout will have under the hood: a 4-inch 480×800 touchscreen, a 1 GHz single-core processor, a 5 MP autofocus rear camera with 720p HD video recording, a secondary VGA front-facing camera, 1 GB of ROM, 512 MB of RAM, microSD card support, microUSB, a 3.5 mm headset jack, Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi, 3G and 4G LTE, and a 1500 mAh battery. It will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Verizon’s Samsung Illusion and Pantech Breakout Android phones leaked

Two of Verizon’s upcoming Android smartphones – the Samsung Illusion and the Pantech Breakout – have appeared in what seem to be official press photos.

The Pantech Breakout is supposed to be a 4G LTE handset, coming with a 4 inch WVGA display, Android Gingerbread, 5MP rear camera, VGA front-facing camera, 512MB of RAM, and a single-core 1GHz processor. Verizon could launch it any day now.

The Samsung Illusion probably also runs Gingerbread, but it’s not an LTE device.

By the looks of it, the Illusion has an HVGA display, and will likely be offered for under $100 on contract. More on this as we get it.

Just in case you were getting tired with Verizon’s current lineup of 4G LTE capable smartphones, Big Red has something in store for you in the near future – yet another 4G LTE device, of course.

For that’s exactly what the Pantech Breakout appears to be, if the following leaked specsheet is to be believed. According to it, the Pantech Breakout won’t be at the top of the high-end, but rather an upper-midrange offering.

It will come with a 1 GHz processor, 512 MB of RAM, 390 MB of internal storage space, microSD support (with an 8 GB card preinstalled), a 4-inch 480×800 touchscreen, a 5 MP rear camera, as well as a secondary VGA front-facing camera. The Pantech Breakout will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Nothing earth-shattering in there, but nothing to be ashamed of in this day and age either. And we have a feeling that the Breakout will be the most affordable 4G LTE device to date. However, it’s hard to beat Amazon’s current offer for the HTC ThunderBolt, LG Revolution, and Samsung Droid Charge.

There are no details about when the Breakout will launch or how much it will cost just yet, but those are surely on the way if someone somewhere is already busy creating comparison sheets. As always, we’ll keep you posted.

AT&T will push Gingerbread to all smartphones released this year, as well as the Samsung Captivate

AT&T has decided to make its customers happy. At least its customers that have purchased an Android-powered device from the carrier this year, and those who own a Samsung Captivate (AT&T’s version of last year’s Samsung Galaxy S). How so?

Well, AT&T has announced that its entire lineup of post-paid Android smartphones released this year will be getting updated to Android 2.3 Gingerbread, which at the moment is the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system. The smartphones in question are the HTC Inspire 4G, LG Phoenix, Motorola Atrix 4G, Pantech Crossover, and Samsung Infuse 4G. The Samsung Captivate will also receive an update to Gingerbread even if it was launched last year.

Where possible, the updates will come over-the-air, with the phone notifying you that an updated version of the OS is available. This might however not be possible for all devices, so in some cases you may have to use a computer to perform the update.

Unfortunately, AT&T hasn’t given us a clear timeline for the updates for all of the aforementioned handsets. However, the update for the Motorola Atrix 4G has already started rolling out, and the one for the HTC Inspire 4G is expected to start rolling out in the next few weeks (in August). As for when the rest of the smartphones will get to taste Gingerbread, it remains to be seen. We’ll be here to let you know as soon as we find out more.

Aside from the HTC Status, AT&T had another phone launch today. And even if the price is identical to that of HTC’s Facebook-centric Android-powered smartphone, this is anything but a smartphone. In fact, it has to be aimed at those people who absolutely hate smartphones, or hate the idea of a phone doing anything more than calling and texting. But mostly calling. It has to be aimed at them, since who else would, for example, choose this over the Status, considering they both go for the same amount of dough?

The mystery device in question is the Pantech Breeze III, which is apparently also known as the breEZe. Get it? EZ.

Well, it should be that, because it’s not much else, now is it? The Pantech Breeze III is obviously the successor to last year’s Breeze II, which itself was the successor to the original Breeze from 2008. The Breeze III is a flip phone, a clamshell if you will. It has 3G support (3.6 Mbps HSDPA), a 2.2-inch 240×320 internal display, a 1.3-megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, 80 MB of internal storage space expandable via microSD cards, 1000-entry phonebook, MP3 player, and a 920 mAh battery.

If you’re interested in picking one up, you’ll have to shell out $49.99 (after a $50 mail-in rebate), while agreeing to a new two-year contract. If that sounds good to you, head over to AT&T and do the deed. You can also get it at Amazon for a penny.

AT&T has a BREW-based phone on the way. It’s the Pantech Pursuit II, obviously meant to serve as some kind of a successor to the original Pantech Pursuit which AT&T launched last year. The Pursuit II is aimed at heavy texters, as it’s a ‘messaging phone’ that comes complete with a physical QWERTY keyboard that’s revealed via some hot portrait sliding action.

The Pantech Pursuit II has a 2.8-inch QVGA (240×320) touchscreen, a 230 MHz processor, microSD card support, HSDPA, a 2 MP camera with video recording capability, and it runs Qualcomm’s BREW MP 1.0.2.

The Pantech Pursuit II will become available on July 17 in pink and green (seen above). The phone will cost $49.99 (after a $50 mail-in rebate) with a new two-year contract. You’ll be able to find it both online and in AT&T stores nationwide.

Previously known as Pantech Moon and Pantech Bannik, the P8000 has been officially announced by AT&T under the name of Pantech Crossover.

The Crossover is Pantech’s first Android smartphone made for the US market. It runs Android 2.2 Froyo, and features a sliding QWERTY keyboard, a 3.1 inch touchscreen display of unknown resolution (I’d say HVGA), accelerometer, HSPA, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Mobile Hotspot, GPS, 3.5mm headset jack, 3MP camera, a 600MHz processor, and a 2GB memory card pre-installed.

AT&T said the Pantech Crossover would be available starting June 5. Its price? Just $69.99 with a new 2-yr contract agreement.

If you are interested in dual-core smartphones, you’ll be excited to hear about the latest superphone from an unexpected manufacturer.

Pantech may not have a very large presence in the smartphone market in the US, but it does pretty well back at home in Korea. The latest addition to their roster is the Vega Racer, the world’s first 1.5 GHz dual-core phone. This device packs some serious power with Qualcomm’s MSM8660 Snapdragon chip, which is the same chip as HTC EVO 3D and the HTC Sensation 4G, except both of those have been restricted to a slower 1.2 GHz.

It also features 1 GB RAM, Adreno 220 GPU, a 4.3-inch TFT LCD display with 800×480 WVGA resolution, and a 8 MP front-facing and 1.3 MP rear camera. Pantech also mentioned that they are working on a tablet as well.

This device brings up the question on why we don’t have this type of processor out yet in the US? As mentioned previously, there are a few phones that are expected to be released sometime in the near future with 1.2GHz processors like the HTC EVO 3D and the rumored Samsung Hercules, while the Vega Racer has an expected release date later this month on SK-Telecom.

The main reasoning I can think of is the marketing strategies implemented by mobile phone manufacturers such as HTC for example. They can make a phone such as the EVO 3D and will probably sell plenty of devices and then release a phone such as the HTC G Infinity several months later with an upgraded 1.5GHz processor and people will be awe struck.

What really beats me is why doesn’t Pantech try its hand at the smartphone market in the US? The Vega Racer would have the fastest processor on the market and it shows us that Pantech has the resources to run with the big dogs like HTC and Samsung.

For now, we can only envy our friends over in Korea who will relish the speeds of the Vera Racer.

Pantech Vega X – the first Android phone DDR2 memory?

Pantech has officially unveiled a new Android smartpohne – the Vega X (we first heard of it last week, when the Dell Venue was announced).

Slated to be available in South Korea later this week via KT and LG Telecom, the Pantech Vega X runs Android 2.2 Froyo and features a 4 inch WVGA touchscreen display, 5MP autofocus camera, and a 1GHz Snapdragon MSM8255 processor.

What’s special about the Vega X is that it comes with DDR2 memory (probably 512MB) – as far as I know, it’s the first Android handset to use DDR2. According to Pantech, this makes it 1.5 faster than previous smartphones (which feature DDR1).

“When surfing the Internet, searching the Web, running applications or 3D games, its speed is so fast that it could threaten the existence of personal computers,” said Pantech Vice President Lee Eung-joon.

Pantech may want to include some DDR2 goodness in that P8000 Moon, too, which could be launched by AT&T in the US.

The company plans to launch more than 10 different smartphone models in 2011. I assume most of them will run Android.

P8000 Moon might be Pantech’s first Android phone for AT&T

AT&T has launched many Pantech phones until now, but none of them is running Android. Well, that’s about to change with the arrival of P8000, an unannounced Android smartphone that was recently approved by the FCC with support for AT&T 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

According to the Bluetooth SIG, the handset is called Pantech Moon – of course, its final name might be different.

The smartphone (sketched below) seems to have the same form factor as the Pantech Laser. It may or may not feature a QWERTY keyboard.

There’s no word on when AT&T plans to launch the Pantech P8000 Moon. We’ll bring new details as soon they’re available.

Verizon’s Pantech UML290 4G LTE modem available tomorrow, too

Earlier this week, when Verizon announced that its 4G LTE network would go live on December 5 (i.e. tomorrow), it said that only the LG VL600 modem would be available for the beginning.

However, it turns out that there will be two modems launched tomorrow. Apart form the LG one, customers will also be able to buy the Pantech UML290 4G.

The Pantech modem will provide 4G download speeds of up to 12Mbps, and upload speeds of up to 5Mbps (where LTE coverage is available, of course). The modem obviously also supports Verizon’s 3G network.

Like LG’s modem, the UML290 4G will cost $99.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate – new 2-yr contract and a 4G Mobile Broadband Plan are required. More info on Verizon’s LTE network can be found here.

Verizon announces new phones: LG Octane VN530 and Pantech Crux

Verizon Wireless has announced the launch of two new feature phones priced at under $100 on contract and available starting tomorrow: LG Octane VN530 and Pantech Crux (both mentioned in Verizon’s fall roadmap leaked in August).

The LG Octane is a curious mix between the LG Cosmos and the LG enV Touch. It features a small display and an alphanumeric keyboard on the outside, and a larger screen plus a full QWERTY keyboard on the inside.

The phone also comes with social networking integration (Facebook, MySpace, Twitter), Visual Voice Mail, HTML web browser, email, Skype mobile support, Bluetooth 2.1, 3.2 MP autofocus camera with video recording, and MicroSD card support.

Verizon will sell the LG Octane for $99.99 with a 2-yr agreement (after a $50 mail-in rebate).

The second new phone, Pantech Crux, features a 3 inch touchscreen display, virtual QWERTY keyboard, access to social networking sites, HTML web browser, photo camera, and MicroSD card support (1GB card pre-installed).

The Pantech Crux will cost $49.99 on contract (after a $50 mail-in rebate).

AT&T announces its first LTE-compatible device and new Pantech Laser QWERTY phone

AT&T has yet to roll out its LTE/4G network, but that doesn’t mean it can’t announce LTE-compatible devices, right?

The first AT&T device capable of supporting LTE is the LG Adrenaline USB dongle – which will receive a software upgrade to work on the carrier’s 4G network when this launches (sometime in 2011). Until then, the dongle will provide access to HSPA and Wi-Fi to customers who sign up for DataConnect or DataConnect Pass plans.

The LG Adrenaline will cost $49.99 with a 2-yr contract agreement.

In other AT&T news, the carrier has also announce the Pantech Laser, a new phone presented as “the thinnest, full sliding keyboard device” is has ever offered (it measures only 9.95mm in thickness).

The Pantech Laser features a 3.1 inch AMOLED touchscreen display, full QWERTY keyboard, social networking integration, AT&T Navigator, and 3MP camera. It will be available starting October 17 for $99.99 on contract (after a $50 mail-in rebate).

AT&T roadmap leak: Motorola Flipout on Sunday, Samsung WP7 devices on October 17th?

It’s leak time again. This time, a roadmap for AT&T’s launches for the next month or so has apparently surfaced. These all have rumor status as of now, so have the standard-sized pinch of salt near while you read through.

First, there’s the Motorola Flipout, supposedly launching no later than this Sunday. This square-ish device has a unique form factor and spec-wise it’s a midrange Android smartphone, running Motoblur. It will be joined on Sunday by the LG Neon II, the successor to the (you guessed it!) LG Neon.

October 3rd will be RIM day on AT&T, with releases of the BlackBerry Pearl 3G and the Curve 3G. Also that day, the Pantech Laser will launch. This is probably a featurephone.

Things get really interesting on October 17th. On that date, the Motorola Bravo and Flipside are going to be launched. There have been no previous leaks regarding these devices, but judging from Moto’s recent track record, we can safely assume these are Android-running smartphones.

Alongside Moto’s offerings, the Samsung Patek and Universe will also come on October 17th. At least one of these devices may be running Windows Phone 7, given that their launches are so close to the supposed date when Microsoft’s latest mobile OS will be officially introduced.

This last bit is especially speculative, considering that there were no leaks of these devices yet. The Samsung i917 Cetus is clearly headed to AT&T at some point, and it will run WP7. Now “Cetus” may just have been a code name and it’s entirely possible that its release name will be different, perhaps even Patek or Universe. Or not.

These may just be featurephones, after all. One way or the other, AT&T has got a busy month or so ahead. And that’s exciting if you’re in the market for a new phone on America’s largest GSM carrier, since very soon you’ll have even more handsets to choose from.

Verizon fall roadmap leaked: 10 MP Android, BlackBerry Storm 3 and Curve 3, tablets and more

Since the summer is nearing its end, it’s only natural that Verizon’s roadmap for September, October and November would be leaked.

After all, we’ve gotten used to knowing all there is about the Big Red’s upcoming launches months before they happen.

So here’s what Verizon has in store for us this fall.

In September, the Motorola Droid 2 World Edition will make its debut. We’ve heard about this device yesterday, and now we seem to have a release time frame. This is the version of the Droid 2 that has support for both CDMA and GSM, making it a ‘global roaming’ phone.

Also in September, the Motorola WX445 Citrus will be made official, this is a youth-oriented Android-powered phone that we’ve seen once before, and will probably be appealing to those on a tight budget.

Some new featurephones will make their way to Verizon in September as well. They are the LG Octane VN530 (touchscreen), the LG VN270 (which may be a replacement for the LG Cosmos), the Pantech Crux and the ZTE Salute. All of these will be competing primarily on price, and not fancy features.

In mid to late October, the BlackBerry Storm 3 9570 will be released. It will run BlackBerry OS 6, but still come with the SurePress touchscreen of its predecessors, instead of going for the more widely-adopted capacitive touchscreen tech like the recently released BlackBerry Torch 9800.

The new BlackBerry Curve 3 9330 may also hit stores in October.

Also in October, the Samsung Fascinate will finally be available. This represents a delay from the previous rumors surrounding this device which had it pegged for a late September release. Be it September or October, it’s really hard to understand why Verizon keep delaying the launch of their version of the Galaxy S, since all their competitors already sell theirs. I can only think this has something to do with not cannibalizing Droid X sales. Anyway, bad news if you wanted a Galaxy S on Verizon.

Alongside the Fascinate and the previously-seen lower-end Samsung Gem Android smartphone comes the Samsung Continuum I400, which will fit nicely in between the aforementioned devices as it is a midranger.

Still in October, which is gearing up to be one of the busiest months for Verizon in recent times, the Motorola XT610 will see the light of day. This will probably be yet another Android smartphone, with a screen size similar to that of the Droid X, but lesser specs such as a 3.2 or 5MP camera and a slower processor. It should get priced as a midrange smartphone, in the $100-$150 range, which may make it interesting for a lot of people.

Another possible October launch could be the Motorola A957, which, according to yesterday’s rumors, is the Droid Pro. Today’s info is a bit confusing in this regard, since there’s mention that it could be branded “Sick”. One way or the other, there’s no further info on this one just yet.

And finally for October, the Palm Pre 2 may make its debut, although every single detail about this phone is being kept under wraps, it seems. Whatever the specs, just the fact that HP won’t be abandoning the smartphone world to focus exclusively on tablets with webOS is good news.

November will be tablet month on Verizon.

The Motorola MZ600, first talked about yesterday, will be available, as will a Samsung tablet dubbed the I800. Of the two, the Samsung may be the one with the larger screen. This Samsung tablet may or may not be the Galaxy Tab we keep hearing about. That was rumored to have the model number P1000 at one point. That may have changed. Or I800 could be the model designation for its CDMA version. Or this could be another device altogether. This remains to be seen.

A dual screen e-reader plus Android tablet called the enTourage eDGe is also set to launch in November, alongside a little brother called enTourage Pocket.

Last, but definitely not least, in November we’ll see a 10 MP camera-equipped Android smartphone from HTC, the HTC Merge, show up on Verizon. This device will sport a processor of unknown speed, but definitely above the 1 GHz which is more or less the norm today in the high-end smartphone space.

All in all, as has been the case recently, Verizon is banking a lot on Android, with many different form factor devices coming in at many different prices to satisfy all smartphone-related needs that Big Red’s customers may have. At least until that CDMA iPhone will launch, if ever.

It will be interesting to find out what Verizon have got planned for December, given the holiday shopping season and all that, but I’m sure that it will leak at some point soon, as has this roadmap you’ve just read about and the many before it.

Pantech makes dual SIM phones, too: P4000 and P1000 (video)

Pantech P4000 and Pantech P1000 are two new phones that, surprisingly, feature dual SIM capabilities. I say “surprisingly” because I had no idea Pantech wanted to enter the dual SIM phone market. And yet it did.

Pantech Italy’s website presents both the P4000 and P1000, and they seem to be available only in Italy at the moment.

The Pantech P4000 is a touchscreen handset with a 3 inch WQVGA display, quad-band GSM/EDGE connectivity, Facebook access, FM radio with RDS, Bluetooth 2.0, 3.2MP camera, MicroSD card support, and a 1000 mAh battery (talk time: up to 4.5 hours).

The second device – the Pantech P1000 – is certainly not among the prettiest phone I’ve sent his year, and its 1.8 inch, 128 x 160 off-center screen bears some of the blame for this. The handset features dual-band GSM/EDGE connectivity (900/1800MHz), 3.5mm headset jack, FM radio, Bluetooth 2.0, 1.3MP camera and MicroSD card support.

The prices of P4000 and P1000 are not known. The phones are probably not too expensive, though. For example, the P1000 could cost about as much as the Samsung E2152 (~ €90).

AT&T’s Pantech Pursuit. Quick review

Word of the Pantech Pursuit, one of Pantech’s latest touchscreen phones, hit the wires earlier this year in an AT&T press release alongside several other like-minded Quick Messaging Devices (QMD), including the Pantech Link, Samsung Strive, and Samsung Sunburst. The Samsung phones were pictured all over the place, but Pantech was much more shy, only giving basic specs on its new offerings.

When I finally was able to look at the Pursuit up close and personal, pictures were not available. I wasn’t allowed to take pictures of it, though I could play with it as much as I wanted to and write up my thoughts and some specs on the device. You can find those thoughts and specs here.

My first impressions of the Pursuit were very positive. With both the Link and Pursuit it appeared as though Pantech were progressing well in the quality of its handsets, as both were built as solid phones that looked like they would hold up for a long period of time. Not all of Pantech’s phones have felt the same way in the past (read: Slate) so this was a welcome sight to see.

With some extended time with the Pursuit, have my thoughts changed or were they reaffirmed? Read on for my review of the Pantech Pursuit.

Design of the Pantech Pursuit

Pantech has been known for making smaller-sized devices (remember the C300?). Even though the Pursuit has a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard with fairly sizable keys as well as a touchscreen, it could never be considered bulky by any stretch of the imagination. It measures at 3.6” long, 2.5” wide, and .6” thick.

It’s meant to be a petite, mid-range feature phone. When I first saw it, I was actually reminded of the Motorola PEBL clamshell that had a soft rounded out design. There is definitely nothing square about the Pursuit; all of the edges are curved, sleek and fashionable. One drawback to this design is that the keyboard can be difficult to slide out because it’s completely flush with the top half of the phone.

When closed, the Pursuit feels decently comfortable in hand. The only awkwardness is that it’s a bit shorter than most typical phones, due to its small size. So in some ways it does feel as though there should be a taller phone in my hand.

Typing on the keyboard when open has a natural feel, with keys slightly raised like little bubbles and thus easy to type on. However, I would mash my fingers when typing keys on the top row, since there’s very little room left between the top row and the screen. This does throw off my typing groove ever so slightly, but not enough to be a huge concern to me. Besides that little annoyance, I enjoyed typing on the Pursuit’s keyboard.

I love that the keyboard has its own dedicated .com button, which adds convenience when emailing or surfing websites.

Pantech is attempting something it never has in the US: a touchscreen UI. And for a first attempt Pantech didn’t do half-bad, emphasis on the “half”. The interface itself is clean, simple, and set up in a similar fashion to what you’ll find in iOS or Android (though much, much more basic). Your main screen encompasses three front panels and has room for shortcuts, and along the bottom you’re provided with 4 soft buttons for dialpad, contacts, messages, and main menu.

When you slide the keyboard open, that main screen transforms into what already looks like a menu, albeit in landscape mode. The difference is that you only have the one front panel, though it has additional icons.

The main menu itself is similar in style to the iOS. Several preloaded apps are located here and sprawled out over three different pages. Scroll to those pages and click on the icons the same exact way you would on iOS.

One extra note on the touchscreen itself is that it uses a 2.8” resistive screen, thus forcing you to apply more pressure than the typical capacitive screen. As I am used to using capacitive screens normally, this is a rather large adjustment for me. But if this is one of your first touchscreen phones, it shouldn’t be much of an issue. Not to mention that if you are using the Pursuit for messaging — the main purpose for this device — you likely won’t be using the touchscreen for much more than screen navigation and random information anyways.

Available in both light green and sky blue, the Pursuit is designed primarily as an ideal messaging and social networking phone geared towards young adults.

There are no physical buttons on the front; just touch-sensitive call, end and go-back buttons. With a resistive screen, I really would have preferred these to be physical buttons because they can sometimes take two or three attempts to register a touch.

On the sides we have a microSD slot and volume up/down on the left, and the right offers a camera button, power/screen lock, shake control/multitasking, and port for proprietary Pantech charger.

The back has the lens for 2.0 MP camera and uses a similar rubbery-like material that Pantech put on the Link.

Features of the Pantech Pursuit

I just mentioned my impressions of the touchscreen itself, but there are a few nice unique features built into the Pantech Pursuit that are of interest. The first is the sketch pad, found in the tools folder. This is exactly what it sounds like: a doodle pad. Check out the masterpiece I drew on it!

Needless to say, though I’m not the most artistic guy, it’s not going to let you draw the Mona Lisa by any means (especially with resistive display), but it does the trick when you’re bored or you have bored children that are getting restless.

The second touchscreen feature thrown into the Pursuit is Drawing Commander. This gives you the ability to create your own gestures to launch certain applications. So you draw an “a” for address book if that’s what you want it to do.

Truly unique to the Pursuit is the Shake Control feature. Press the multitasking button located on the right side of the phone and then shake the phone once, twice or thrice. Each number of shakes will launch a phone function of your choice. For instance, customize it so one shake will launch messaging, two shakes will launch music player, and so forth. It’s definitely a fun way of accessing shortcuts.

Interestingly, the Pursuit has apps preloaded for Facebook and MySpace already. Since I don’t use MySpace, I could only access Facebook and could tell it was based on the service’s mobile website. Most basic things were accessible enough on it — status updates, walls, photo galleries, etc. — but don’t expect to be playing Farmville on it.

AT&T also has new services mainly based on its new Quick Messaging Devices, such as AT&T Address Book, SocialNet and Online Locker. You can read more about these services in my review on the Pantech Link.

Also included in the Pursuit are voice command, calendar, alarm clock (by the way, the snooze can be used as part of the shake control feature), music player, bluetooth, voice memos, and pretty much any other basic feature you’ll find in any phone. Its MicroSD slot will support up to 16 GB. Not bad for a small messaging phone.

The Pursuit also has an HTML browser based on AT&T’s newest att.net service. The touchscreen definitely has an added benefit in this browser in that you can easily scroll up and down when navigating websites. The downside is that everything is smaller, and not every website pulls up the same way you would see it on most smartphones, as you can see in the picture below.

It also features a 2.0 MP camera, which will be good enough to satisfy most youth-aged users of the phone. The camera takes real good pictures for a mid-range messaging phone, but it’s not going to be the best on market. For the target age group the Pursuit is going after, however, this camera will work out wonderfully. Especially compared to most of Pantech’s previous offerings. It adds nice features like smile detection (which even just a year or two ago was reserved for only higher-end phones), blink detection, and panorama shots. The camera also has video recording capabilities available in two different resolutions.

Performance of the Pantech Pursuit

I’ll spend the least amount of time here, because it performs precisely how you would expect a small, mid-range and youth-centric messaging phone to act: pretty decent. Call quality was good, the speakerphones were loud enough for me though a little tinny-sounding, and battery life will last you up to 5 hours in talk time.

While the touchscreen was responsive enough for my needs, the performance of the processor seemed sluggish at times. Naturally, the processor isn’t going to be top-notch like you would find on a smartphone, but I still found myself having to wait for a few seconds after certain tasks. It took way too long to navigate through the Facebook app as I tried to look through a friend’s profile, and whenever I needed to press the back button I had to either wait for a few seconds or try pressing it again to actually register the action.

Overview of the Pantech Pursuit

All in all, I had an enjoyable time using this phone. The Pursuit was designed very cleverly, had all the necessary features plus a few unique ones that add extra value, and performed rather well. Frankly, the Pursuit is meant to be a good messaging phone with a few extra bells and whistles thrown in, and I think Pantech did a great job putting it together.

I loved how Pantech designed the keyboard, cramming it in a small space but raising the keys enough to make the keys feel bigger than they actually were. I enjoyed the touchscreen as long as I didn’t have to rely on it heavily. It was great for light scrolling and accessing random information, but the more I relied on its touchscreen, the more frustrating the resistive screen style became to me.

Some other annoyances I had with the Pursuit were its sluggish processor (again, to be expected given the phone’s target demographic, but still) and placement of the touch-sensitive keys on the front as well as the keyboard’s top row.

Most of all, I appreciated that I found the Pursuit to be as exciting to review as it was to preview when I saw it at CTIA 2010. The big difference is that at least this time I was allowed to take pictures of it!

Pantech Jest, Samsung Haven and N150 stand next to the Droid X in Verizon coming soon list

In case you’re not interested in Verizon’s Motorola Droid X or Samsung Fascinate, you should know that the largest US carrier is also getting ready to launch some cheaper phones: the Pantech Jest and the Samsung Haven u320.

PhoneArena has managed to obtain a list of devices that are coming soon to Verizon and, of course, the Haven and the Jest stand next to the Droid X in it.

There’s even a new Samsung netbook on the list, namely the Samsung N150, which features a 1.66GHz Intel Atom CPU, 10.1 inch display, 1GB of RAM, and a 160GB HD.

The Pantech Jest is a phone with a sliding QWERTY keyboard, QVGA display, VZ Navigator, 2MP camera, and MicroSD card support. The Samsung Haven u320 is a basic clamshell with a color external display, dedicated keys (voice command, voicemail, speakerphone), and no photo camera. Pantech Jest, Samsung Haven and Samsung N150 should be launched by Verizon next month (July). Their prices are not known at the moment.

Pantech A630K is the first Android phone designed for women

Pantech has announced its second Android smartphone, the IM-A630K “Crystal de Izar”, which comes not long after the Sirius IM-A600S – which, of course, is the company’s first handset based on Google’s OS.

The Pantech A630K is designed specifically for women and comes with an interesting bottom – it looks like some sort of a crystal, and it can light up in different colors, apparently depending on what functions of the phone you’re using.

The handset’s other features include a 3.2 inch WVGA touchscreen display, Bluetooth, T-DMB TV tuner, a 5MP photo camera and a 4GB memory card preinstalled.

The Pantech A630K should be available in South Korea (via KT) starting July. Like the Sirius, the new smartphone will receive an Android 2.2 Froyo update later this year.

Pantech Ease QWERTY phone introduced by AT&T

Alongside the Android-based HTC Aria, today AT&T has also announced the Pantech Ease, a touchscreen featurephone with a sliding QWERTY keyboard.

According to the second-largest US carrier, the new Pantech device is its “first quick messaging phone with menus and features designed for users who seek simplicity in their wireless device” – and that explains the name.

AT&T puts the Ease into the same family with the Pantech Breeze and Breeze II, saying it’s “for everyone – from children to great-grandparents.” The phone has an Advanced mode and an Easy mode (the later being perfect for senior users), and features a 3.2 inch screen, HSPA, HTML browser, AT&T navigator, Voice Mode (users can dictate messages instead of typing them), and a 2MP camera.

Like the HTC Aria, Pantech Ease will be available starting June 20. With a contract agreement for two years, the phone will cost $69.99 (after a $50 rebate).

Google Nexus One will be available in South Korea starting late June, and the carrier to offer it is KT, the country’s second largest mobile operator.

The price for the Nexus One in Korea was not disclosed. KT says that the smartphone (the world’s first to get Android 2.2) will be available both online and via various retailers.

KT also offers the Apple iPhone in South Korea, which, according to YonhapNews, was sold in 732,000 units since November 2009 when it was launched. Judging by its sales in the US, the Nexus One will most likely not be that popular – although you can never know what happens.

In other news from Korea, Pantech announced that its Sirius IM-A600S Android 2.1 smartphone would be updated to Android 2.2 Froyo, but it didn’t say when exactly.

While inches and megapixels get superseded pretty fast in the upgrade-crazy technologically advanced world of today, Korean mobile phone maker Pantech knows one thing that never gets old: style. That’s what its newest phone, the SKY Check Mate IM-S610K made for Korea Telecom, brings to the table.

It may not be oozing in sex appeal and it may lack a lot of bling, but it is able to look great in its own simple way. It’s fashioned in a clamshell form factor and comes in white, titanium, golden and red (in combination with black).

Here’s a short list of its features:

Pantech, South Korea’s third-largest phone maker, has just announced its first Android device, the Pantech Sirius IM-A600S.

The Sirius is a thin (11.5 mm) full-touch smartphone with features that put it next to the likes of Google Nexus One and HTC Desire.

The handset runs Android 2.1 and comes with a 3.7 inch WVGA AMOLED touchscreen display, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, Wi-Fi, T-DMB, DivX support, 5MP camera, 500MB of internal memory, and an 8GB memory card in the box.

Pantech Sirius IM-A600S will be available in South Korea starting this month, via SK telecom. The handset’s price will be of 900,000 won (about $810).

Pantech says that it’s currently in talks with Verizon, AT&T and Japan’s KDDI for launching Android smartphones – it’s not clear yet if the Sirius is included here, but it might be.

AT&T has just announced its 2010 spring portfolio of “quick messaging devices” (which includes two phones made by Samsung and two made by Pantech), as well as new cloud-based services for them.

Let’s talk about the new services first.

AT&T Mobile Share provides users with their own web-based storage locker called “AT&T Locker”. This enables you to transfer, store and share photos and videos from a mobile phone. The stored content can also be accessed and managed via your PC. AT&T Mobile Share costs $10 per month and includes 250MB of storage space and 50 media transfers. Additional 10GB of storage can be purchased for $5 per month.

Another new web-based service is AT&T Address Book, which automatically syncs your contacts to an online address book that’s accessible from both your phone and your PC.

AT&T has also announced Next Generation Messaging, which should bring an advanced messaging experience to AT&T customers. It includes “a consolidated inbox”, group messaging, threaded conversation format, and “reply all” format.

And now the new phones:

Samsung Strive is the phone that will first include AT&T’s new services. It’s a vertical slider with a full QWERTY keyboard, email, instant messaging, social networking apps and a 2MP camera. The Samsung Strive will be available starting March 21. For a limited period of time, the phone will cost $19.99 with a 2-yr contract agreement.

Samsung Sunburst is a touchscreen phone with an unusual design. It features GPS and a widget bar that “allows one-touch access to a wealth of phone functions like creating a text message, in addition to direct links to social networking sites”. The Sunburst will also be available at the same time with the Samsung Strive, for $39.99 on contract.

Pantech Pursuit and Pantech Link’s prices were not announced, but we know that the Pursuit is a touchscreen phone with a QWERTY keyboard (maybe it’s the Pantech P9020?), and the Link is a candybar, also with a QWERTY keyboard. The Pantech Link will be available at AT&T in the coming weeks, while the Pantech Pursuit should be launched in the summer.

Pantech P9020 QWERTY phone for AT&T passes the FCC

Pantech and AT&T have always been good friends, and lately they’ve been pushing out weirdly-designed phones, like the Pantech Reveal and Pantech Impact.

Also weird is the Pantech P9020, which has just received FCC’s blessing to be used on the GSM 850/1900 and WCDMA 850/1900 bands.

The User Manual of Pantech P9020 includes references to AT&T services (AT&T Music, AT&T Navigator), so it’s only a matter of time until the second largest US carrier will announce the phone.

The P9020 is a 14.1mm-thick handset with a 2.8 inch QVGA touchscreen display and a sliding QWERTY keyboard that looks easy to use. Its other features include Bluetooth, email, 2MP camera and MicroSD card slot.

No word yet on the price of Pantech P9020, but AT&T will probably offer it for under $100 on contract.

First announced by AT&T at the beginning of October, the Pantech Impact will be available starting this Sunday (22 November).

The Impact is a weird messaging phone, featuring a “high-gloss faceplate” with haptic-enabled keys, and a full QWERTY keyboard. The handset also has two displays: a small external one and a larger internal one.

Other features include 3G, GPS, music player, AT&T HTML mobile browser, photo camera, video recording, and easy access to IM and email.

Pantech Impact will be available from AT&T in bright blue and soft pink, for $99.99 with a 2-yr contract agreement and after a $50 mail-in rebate.

Announced at the same time with Samsung Mythic, Samsung Flight and Pantech Impact, the Pantech Reveal C790 is now available for purchase via AT&T.

Previously known as Pantech Aladdin, the Reveal is a slider phone that features an alphanumeric keypad, as well as a full QWERTY one. The keypads are simultaneously active, “providing a truly quick messaging experience.”

Coming in two color versions (red and blue), the Pantech Reveal wants to be a “perfect gift for any trendsetting teen or tween”.

The phone’s features include: 2.2 inch QVGA display, 3G connectivity, AT&T Navigator, IM, email, HTML browser, music/video player, 1.3MP camera and MicroSD card support (up to 16GB).

Announced by Pantech a few weeks ago, the Sky DuPont IM-U510LE luxury phone is now available in South Korea via SK Telecom, the country’s largest mobile carrier.

The Sky DuPont is a full-touch candybar with golden accents, designed to remind users of the DuPont lighters’ look. The phone, which measures 106.8 x 50.8 x 11.15 mm and weighs 90 grams, actually opens up like a DuPont lighter to unveil a 3MP photo camera.

Other features include a 3 inch touchscreen display with 240 x 400 pixels, GPS, DMB TV, Music player, email and MicroSD card support.

The price of Pantech DuPont is of around $830 – it’s the most expensive Pantech phone made until now.

Verizon is getting ready to release a really weird Pantech phone, called Razzle TXT8030.

The bottom of Pantech Razzle TXT8030 has two sides and it can be rotated, transforming the handset in either a full QWERTY phone, or in a device that looks more like a Portable Music Player (with stereo speakers and dedicated controls).

The Razzle also features a landscape display (probably QVGA), VZ Navigator, 1.3MP camera and MicroSD card support.

Verizon should release the Pantech Razzle TXT8030 in October, for a price that is not known at the moment.

Like Prada, Armani and Dolce&Gabbana before it, the French company S.T. DuPont has decided to enter the mobile market by making a cell phone in collaboration with a big manufacturer.

The manufacturer is Pantech, South Korea’s third largest handset maker, and the new phone is Pantech Sky DuPont IM-U510LE.

The DuPont phone was announced today in Korea. Pantech says that its design is inspired by DuPont’s famous lighters.

The handset has gold-plated edges and it features a 3 inch touchscreen display, 2G-only connectivity, GPS and a 3MP camera. Other specs are not known at the moment.

Pantech C790 Aladdin confirmed for AT&T

One of AT&T’s upcoming messaging phones is the Pantech C790, also called Pantech Aladdin – perhaps after Disney’s beloved character?

The C790 Aladdin has been recently approved by the Bluetooth SIG, so it might not be long until AT&T announces it.

Like other Pantech phones released by AT&T (the Matrix Pro, for example), the Pantech C790 has both an alphanumeric and a QWERTY keyboard.

The Bluetooth SIG’s image of the phone is far from being great, so I had to add some brightness to it.

Engadget reported about the Pantech Aladdin back in May, but it looks like the phone has a different design now – the nav-pad is definitely changed. This is what the handset previously looked like:

The features of Pantech C790 Aladdin should include a 2.2 inch QVGA display, quad-band GSM and tri-band HSDPA connectivity, AGPS, Bluetooth, threaded SMS, 1.3MP camera, and MicroSD card support.

We don’t know when AT&T will launch the Pantech Aladdin, but we’d like to see a Pantech Jasmine and a Pantech Genie showing up. Or, why not, a Pantech Iago & Abu, too.

Qualcomm takes equity in South Korea’s Pantech

Pantech, South Korea’s third largest phone maker, announced that Qualcomm would become a minority shareholder in both Pantech Co. Ltd. and Pantech & Curitel Communications Inc., as a result of the Korean company’s plan to convert its “outstanding debt” into equity for its creditors.

Qualcomm will become a passive investor, holding no more than 15% of Pantech’s common shares, without being part of the company’s management.

According to Dr. Cha Young Koo, president of Qualcomm Korea, “this conversion will create a stronger platform on which Pantech can continue to build its prior successes in developing unique and innovative products.”

To further increase its market share, Pantech plans to launch new phones in Korea, Japan, and the US (through AT&T and Verizon).

Continuing its somewhat clever way of naming products (remember the TruEmotion UI?), Pantech has just launched a new phone, dubbed Pantech doublEye IM-U490S.

Released under the Sky brand, Pantech doublEye is a slider that has a Picture-in-picture feature and lets you use the photo camera and the video camera at the same time.

The phone also comes with a 2.6-inch QVGA display, animated Flash menu, widgets support, HSPDA (7.2Mbps), DMB-TV tuner, music player, 3MP camera, 130MB of internal memory and MicroSD card support.

The price of Pantech doublEye is of 400,000 South Korean won (about $328). The phone is sold via SK Telecom and it probably won’t be released outside Korea.

O2 Xda Venn launched – a British Pantech Matrix Pro

O2 UK has just launched a new smartphone from its Xda series – the Xda Venn.

The Venn is actually a rebranded version of the Pantech Matrix Pro, which is already available in the US, via AT&T.

Coming with Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard on board, O2 Xda Venn features two sliding keypads: an alphanumeric and a full QWERTY one.

The smartphone is a bit bulky, measuring 21mm in thickness, but at least it looks pretty good:

First seen last month, when Pantech announced its new TruEmotion 3D User Interface, the IM-R470S touchscreen phone is now available in South Korea, via SK Telecom.

Launched under Pantech’s Sky brand, the IM-R470S seems to be a great multimedia device.

It can play unconverted video files (H.264, MPEG4, DivX, XviD) and display them on the 3.2 inch WVGA (800 x 480 pixels) Sharp LCD screen, which has a 160 degree viewing angle.

The phone also features the already-mentioned TruEmotion 3D Cube UI, accelerometer, proximity sensor, DMB TV tuner, Back Ground Play, Picture in Picture, GPS, Bluetooth, a 3MP autofocus camera, and 4GB of internal memory.

The IM-R470S is a Korea-only handset, but let’s hope that Pantech will launch similar phones (with the TrueEmotion UI) outside its home country soon.
