Samsung Galaxy S4 Active now getting Android 4.4 KitKat outside of the US

Following in the footsteps of AT&T’s version, the internationally sold Samsung Galaxy S4 Active (with the model number GT-I9295) is now in the process of receiving the update to Android 4.4 KitKat. Interestingly, and in a twist compared to how things usually go with such rollouts, AT&T’s Galaxy S4 Active was the first variation of the device to get the new software – in the world. Now though, those outside of the US who have purchased a Galaxy S4 Active can look forward to getting the new bits too. The international rollout has started in the Netherlands, where software version I9295XXUCNE5 (with Android 4.4.2) is now heading to devices over-the-air or via Kies, Samsung’s desktop PC app. This update will bring with it faster performance, the white status bar icons, better battery life, full screen album art on the lock screen while playing music, a camera shortcut on the lock screen, support for wireless printing, and the ability to easily set default launcher and messaging apps. KitKat should soon be making its way to Galaxy S4 Active handsets purchased from other countries too, so if you can be patient just a little while longer you’ll receive the gift of having the latest version of Android on your device. Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 has specs confirmed through benchmark

One of the two members of the upcoming Galaxy Tab S line from Samsung has been put through the paces of the AnTuTu benchmark recently, and thanks to that we get a list of its most important specs sort of confirmed. Obviously, this isn’t official and straight from the Korean company, but until it decides to announce the Tab S tablets it will have to do. Both of these models will come with Super AMOLED touchscreens, which will be their main differentiating feature compared to the competition. So far we’ve only seen one other AMOLED tablet, and it was also made by Samsung – the Galaxy Tab 7.7 from 2011. No other company has even attempted something like this. The device that has had its specs leaked is the 8.4-inch version of the Tab S. It will come with 2,560×1,600 screen resolution, a 1.9 GHz Samsung Exynos 5420 octa-core processor, 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of built-in storage space, an 8 MP rear camera, a 2 MP front camera, and Android 4.4 KitKat running the show. Its model number is SM-T700, as has been rumored countless times before. Note that the above spec list isn’t exhaustive, so, for example, even if a microSD card slot isn’t mentioned, we’re pretty sure the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 will have one (given Samsung’s track...

Samsung SM-G350 enters India, is probably related to the low-end G357

Last month we got word of a Samsung SM-G357 that was (and probably still is) in the works. This isn’t a flagship of any kind, mind you, rather it’s a low-end offering that may or may not aim to compete with the recently unveiled Moto E. Now the plot thickens, though, for a Samsung SM-G350 has been spotted entering India, courtesy of import tracking website Zauba. The device is going there “for testing and evaluation”, which means it’s still under development. The Samsung SM-G350 has dual-SIM support (pretty much a must in India) and a 4.3-inch touchscreen. That’s essentially all we know about it, but the similarity between its model number and the aforementioned SM-G357 is too big to ignore. So we’ll assume these are somehow related. If that’s true, then the SM-G350 may share some if not all of its other specs with the SM-G357. We’re talking about 480×800 screen resolution, a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of internal storage, a 5 MP rear camera with 1080p Full HD video recording support, a 0.3 MP front camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, NFC, and Android 4.4.2 KitKat running the...

Samsung Galaxy S4 Value Edition launches with Android 4.4 KitKat preinstalled

Like Apple, Samsung still sells last year’s flagship smartphone even after this year’s top of the line model launches. In the specific case we’re facing now, we’re talking about the Galaxy S4 from 2013. It’s obviously cheaper than the Galaxy S5, and may serve some people well. That said, Samsung has just launched a new iteration of the Galaxy S4. It’s called Galaxy S4 Value Edition, and the ‘Value’ in the name seems to come solely from the version of Android it ships with. Stranger things have happened in the mobile world, but this is definitely rather odd. Back in March we saw the Galaxy S III Mini get its very own Value Edition, but it had a few slightly updated specs compared to the original. Not so with the Galaxy S4 Value Edition, which, in terms of hardware, is identical to the ‘vanilla’ non-Value S4. What has changed ever so slightly seems to be the design of the back cover for the grey model (pictured above), and the fact that the Value Edition comes with Android 4.4 KitKat preinstalled. However, there’s an update to KitKat for the original S4 as well, and it’s been rolling out for many weeks now. Suffice to say – we can’t really find the point of this Galaxy S4 Value Edition. Like the S III Value Edition, this model too has been launched in the Netherlands, where you can already order it from one retailer (here in white, and here in silver). It’s priced at €398 sans contract, or you can get it for free with a plan that costs at least €25 per month. Right now it’s unclear if the Samsung Galaxy S4 Value Edition will ever make its debut in other countries, though we’re not sure if you should care. Via...

AT&T Samsung Galaxy S5 Active revealed again

AT&T Samsung Galaxy S5 Active revealed again

We’ve already seen AT&T’s version of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S5 Active a few days ago, when a few hands-on videos showing it got leaked. And now it’s time to lay our eyes on it again, this time in press render form. The image you see below is said to depict AT&T’s Galaxy S5 Active, though thankfully it looks like the carrier has chosen to only apply its logo to the back of the device, leaving the front nice and simple. In fact, from the front, this should be identical to the international variation of the handset. The Samsung Galaxy S5 Active has been rumored to come with the same hardware specs as the ‘vanilla’, non-Active Galaxy S5. On the other hand, the Active features a more rugged design, with rubberized sides for drop protection and may even come with increased water resistance compared to the Galaxy S5, so you’ll be able to take it with you when you’re swimming. Or something like that. Given how much the S5 Active has leaked over the past week or so, we’re expecting it to become official pretty soon. If not this month, then surely in June we’ll be introduced to it by its maker. So stay tuned for that. Via...

Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 and Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 headed to Verizon, press images surface

It looks like Verizon is getting ready to launch a couple of new Samsung Android tablets. The devices in question are the Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 and the Galaxy Tab 4 10.1, both announced at the same time last month. The ‘vanilla’ Galaxy Tab line, now at its fourth generation, comprises of Samsung’s low-end offerings in the tablet space. These aren’t high-performing devices like the Tab Pro or Note Pro tablets, but they’re a lot cheaper than those. And despite not sporting top of the line specs, they do offer decent performance. We know that Big Red will sell the aforementioned two tablets because of a few press renders which got leaked today. They show the Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 (above) and the Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 (below) in all their glory, with Verizon’s branding unapologetically applied. There are no other details about them at the moment, so we can’t tell you exactly when you’ll be able to walk into a Verizon store and purchase one of these, nor for how much. But such info usually gets leaked at some point too, so stay tuned for that. Both tablets have 1,280×800 screen resolution, a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor, 1.5 GB of RAM, a 3 MP rear camera, a 1.3 MP front camera, 16 GB of internal storage, microSD card support, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, and Android 4.4 KitKat running the show. The 8-incher has a 4,450 mAh battery, while the 10.1-inch model comes with a 6,800 mAh cell. Via @evleaks here and...

Gold Samsung Galaxy S5 for Verizon shown in leaked press renders

Yesterday we found out that the gold version of Samsung’s Galaxy S5 is due to be released for all the big four US carriers (plus US Cellular) on May 30. So next week the Galaxy S5 variations offered for sale by US carriers will finally come in all launch colors. But what if you’re not yet convinced you should get a gold Galaxy S5? Maybe you’d like to see what one looks like – yet not the generic international model. Perhaps you’d be interested in seeing a Verizon-branded gold Galaxy S5 then. Yes? Well, OK. Here you go: It’s definitely gold… and flashy. And the band-aid jokes probably won’t stop anytime soon. In a shocking development, Verizon still likes to plaster huge logos onto its smartphones. On the inside everything here will be the same as in the already launched Galaxy S5 variants, so don’t worry about that. When it comes to color choices, it’s all about personal preference. One final note about Verizon’s gold Galaxy S5: unlike what will happen at other carriers, Big Red may not offer this model directly. Instead, if you want it you’ll have to get it from a third-party retailer such as Amazon, though it will still come with Verizon-specific price plans and the likes. Via...

Samsung Galaxy K Zoom pre-orders start in the UK for £400, promo code slashes 10% off that

Samsung’s camera meets smartphone, the Galaxy K Zoom, was announced last month as the successor to the Galaxy S4 Zoom from last year. And now you can pre-order one, if you’re in the UK that is. Samsung itself has started taking pre-orders for the device via its UK-based website. The price you’ll need to pay is £400. However, according to Android Beat you can use the promo code NPR-14G-QKY-WSZ and get 10% off that amount. So after you apply the code, you’ll only need to pay £360 for the Galaxy K Zoom. It’s slated to start shipping on May 29, which is a bit later than the ‘mid-May’ release time frame we’ve previously heard. But what can you do, delays happen and all that. The UK pricing compares favorably to the recommended retail price for Germany that we told you about a few weeks ago. £400 is around €493 at the current exchange rates, while the K Zoom will be sold for €519 in the Eurozone. The Samsung Galaxy K Zoom comes with a 4.8-inch 720p HD Super AMOLED touchscreen, a 20.7 MP BSI rear camera with OIS, Xenon flash, 1080p video recording, and 10x optical zoom, a 2 MP front camera, a hexa-core Samsung Exynos processor (1.7 GHz dual-core plus 1.3 GHz quad-core), 2 GB of RAM, 8 GB of internal storage, microSD card support, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, NFC, and a 2,430 mAh battery. It runs Android 4.4...

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition now on pre-order at T-Mobile, out on June 4

Earlier this month T-Mobile let us know that it would start selling the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition at some point in June. Back then, there were no other details to speak of. Thankfully though, today the magenta carrier has unveiled its pricing for the tablet along with the expected release date. The Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition will be available on June 4. To get one, you’ll need to pay $99.99 upfront, followed by 24 monthly payments of $23. That all adds up to $651.99, a pretty steep price to pay for a tablet nowadays. That said, this model does come with 4G LTE support as you’d expect, so perhaps you’ll cherish that. If you want to be among the uncarrier’s first customers to get your hands on a Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition, then you can pre-order one straight from TMo starting now. Keep in mind though that you’ll need to purchase a $10 SIM starter kit alongside the tablet. This will be added to your order automatically. The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition has a 10.1-inch 2,560×1,600 touchscreen, a 2.3 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage, an 8 MP rear camera, a 2 MP front camera, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and an 8,220 mAh battery. It runs Android 4.4.2...

Gold Samsung Galaxy S5 will be available on May 30 at all the big US carriers

If you’ve always wanted a Samsung Galaxy S5 but so far haven’t been satisfied by the choices you’ve had when it comes to color versions, you’re about to get a lot happier pretty soon. That is, especially if you love gold-colored smartphones. Samsung has just announced that the gold Galaxy S5 will become available on May 30. It will then be offered directly by AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and US Cellular. If Verizon is your carrier of choice, fret not, for there will be a gold Galaxy S5 out for Big Red as well, though only through “select indirect retailers”. That means you won’t be able to pick one up from Verizon itself, but other companies such as Amazon (we assume) will gladly sell you one, complete with Verizon-specific price plans. Although it hasn’t been officially revealed, we expect the pricing of the gold variant of Samsung’s latest flagship smartphone to be identical to what you have to pay for the other color versions. As for the specs, this is the exact same Galaxy S5 as the black and white models – on the inside nothing has changed. Oh, and the gold S5 is still made out of plastic, by the...
