NTT Docomo abandons its Tizen smartphone launch plans for now

Samsung’s own smartphone platform effort, Tizen,  can’t seem to catch a break. Its biggest supporter among mobile carriers – NTT Docomo – just officially announced that they are delaying Tizen smartphone launch plans indefinitely. Samsung and Intel unveiled Tizen OS way back in September 2011, with first devices scheduled to ship in late 2012. That got pushed to spring 2013, then summer 2013, then again- to Q4.  And, obviously,...

And the next Samsung Tizen based product is… a smart fridge

The outlines of Samsung’s not so secret plan for Tizen world domination are becoming more and more clear. Samsung says Tizen is a significant investment, but won’t launch any smartphones or TVs based on it this year

Samsung’s Tizen was born in 2011, when the South Korean company joined forces with Intel, bringing together elements from platforms like LiMo, MeeGo and Bada. Now, two years later, we’ve yet to see the first commercially-available Tizen smartphone. This was supposed to arrive in early 2013, but won’t be launched until next year after all. Even so, Tizen doesn’t seem to be dead, as recently speculated. On the contrary. Today, Kim...
