T-Mobile had plans to expand its 3G network in 20 different markets by the end of year 2008. They had launched their 3G network in New York City during the start of this year and today taking a step further they have launched their 3G network in Las Vegas after a investment of around US$37.5 million in infrastructure and spectrum.

The company said that it will offer some new and compelling data-centric, all-in-one devices that will use the 3G network. One will have to wait and see what kind of devices these will be. A jump in data speed to use the Web or to download content can be expected after the complete launch of 3G network across the US market.

“Customers in Las Vegas are already accustomed to reliable and robust service from T-Mobile, which gets even better with this additional network availability,” said Neville Ray, senior vice president, engineering operations, T-Mobile USA. “This investment in today’s 3G network also sets the foundation to help customers stay closer to their family and friends in new and exciting ways.”

During November of last year, we reported that Vodafone might be one of the first carriers to offer the 3G version of Apple’s iPhone to their customers across the world by this year’s spring. Today, we are glad to say that we haven’t been let down by our sources, and official word from Vodafone confirms that they will indeed start selling Apple’s iPhone later this year.

In an announcement made by Vodafone, it is said that they have signed an agreement with Apple to sell the iPhone in up to ten markets around the world.

It isn’t made clear whether the Vodafone’s version of the Apple iPhone will have support for 3G/UMTS networks, but at least they identified the ten markets that they are going to sell this much-awaited device in later this year. These are Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey.

So yes, if you’re located in any of the ten places that I just enumerated, it is time to rejoice. 3G iPhone or not, at least you’re getting it, which is a step in the right direction.

German chip manufacturer Infineon, who supplies the chips inside the Apple iPhone, has made a bold statement to a magazine called Wirtschaftswoche regarding the existence of a 3G/UMTS iPhone. According to the article, Apple’s 3G iPhone is already developed, and although at first glance it looks much like the original version, it will indeed be different and will have additional features, one of which will be the 3G/UMTS network support.

If this is true, then Apple will be on track for a June 3G iPhone release date, just in time for the forthcoming WWDC (World Wide Developers Conference) 2008.

If I remember correctly, the reason why the iPhone is only capable of running on an EDGE network is because the Infineon chips were not ready for 3G yet. Well, it seems, now they are.

But again, you know how ugly rumors can get sometimes. I say the best option would be to wait for either company to drop a press release or watch out for the keynote of Steve Jobs at WWDC.

In a move to catch up with the rest of the world as they move on to the “modern age,” T-Mobile has just recently launched its very own 3G network, picking a handful of cities in the US as starting points. The first phase of their new 3G network rollout was conducted on May 1, 2008 for New York City, with more cities to get their own 3G (UMTS) networks set up very soon.

The T-Mobile 3G network rollout will actually be done one at a time, at least for now, and the primary cities to become part of this are as follows: New York, Austin, Las Vegas, Minneapolis and Miami.

These are the other US cities bound to get T-Mobile 3G network support very soon.

Dallas
Chicago
Houston
Philadelphia
Denver
Detroit
Orlando
Kansas city
Atlanta
Los Angeles
New England
Portland
Sacramento
San Diego
Seattle
Washington DC
San Francisco
Birmingham
Memphis
Tampa
Phoenix

This is great news for T-Mobile users, as they now have a chance to experience better reception and call quality via the 3G networks.

As early as last year, we have been hearing rumors about the possibility of the world’s first 3G iPhone hitting Italy. We found out from those earlier reports that Vodafone might be the possible carrier of 3G iPhones in Italy, and that these new variants of the would be coming this year’s spring. But the rumors still continue up to now, and the latest development has us looking at Italy again, this time for the likeliness of a 3G iPhone that’s exclusivity-free and without a contract for revenue sharing with Apple. Could this be the true picture of iPhone 2.0?

We do know that an iPhone with support for UMTS is definitely coming, but the question is when, where, and how much? La Repubblica from Italy writes that the time for such a device is nigh, naming Telecom Italia as the exclusive carrier for a summer 2008 launch. This could be feasible basing on earlier reports, but what’s more interesting is that the 3G iPhone might be available without revenue sharing from Apple itself and free of carrier contracts. Supposedly, the Telecom Italia carrier contract that the iPhone will be initially launching with won’t be staying for long. Or at least that’s what they’re telling us.

This is definitely great news especially for the European Mac faithful, but we have to keep in mind that most of these rumors have an equal chance of becoming true and false. We can only hope that this new one doesn’t add to the list of unconfirmed iPhone rumors, and that Apple sees an official launch (or at least an announcement) to us very soon.
