A real marble brick of a smartphone: Mobiado Grand Touch Executive

Remember the times when we used to refer to our mobile phones as bricks? I do. But our handsets started to get smaller, slimmer real fast, and the name just faded away. Well, if you have a bunch of money to spare, you may soon be able to hold a real marble brick of a smartphone in your hand. Courtesy of a luxury handset maker Mobiado. A couple of years ago Mobiado sent out a press release with a picture of a concept phone CPT001, made from a solid block of marble: We all smiled, shrugged, penned our short news pieces about the thing, and promptly forgot about it. Just another weird designer flight of fancy. Or so we thought. Well, it seems that Mobiado was serious about its marble phone. They’ve just sent out another press release, claiming that their first Grand Touch Executive mobile phone based on CPT001 concept and made from a “hybrid stone material”, is almost ready. Granted, Mobiado still can not show us a working phone. Only what looks like a stone chassis and a collection of parts. But now you got me really interested in this thing, guys. Even if I’ll only be able to see it in some closed stand at some millionaires fair. Now can you give me some real pics and more details about that sapphire touchscreen, golden screws and other stuff to drool...

Mobiado Grand Touch Aston Martin is a luxury Samsung Nexus S you probably don’t need

Mobiado has officially unveiled its second Android touchscreen phone, which was designed together with Aston Martin (following the two companies’ collaboration announced back in March 2011). The new handset is called Mobiado Grand Touch Aston Martin, and features the car maker’s logo on the back case. Like the previous Mobiado Grand Touch (introduced in August last year), the Grand Touch Aston Martin is just a Samsung Nexus S dressed in an expensive case. The device’s body is “precision CNC machined” from solid aircraft aluminum, or solid brass with rose / yellow gold – depending on the version. Ebony wood or mother of pearl (MOP) is inserted below the metallic surface. Other materials used include sapphire crystal and stainless steel. All Mobiado Grand Touch Aston Martin models are sold unlocked, and come with quad-band GSM (850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz) and tri-band HSDPA (900 / 1700 / 2100 MHz) connectivity. As for their other features, these are the regular Nexus S ones, including a 4 inch WVGA display, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, 5MP rear camera VGA front-facing camera, 1GHz single-core processor, 512MB of RAM, 16GB of internal memory, and Android Gingerbread. Mobiado didn’t disclose the price of its Grand Touch Aston Martin, but it’s certainly not a low one. You can try to find out where to buy the new handset from here at Mobiado’s website. Via Press...

Mobiado Grand Touch with Android Gingerbread is the company’s first luxury touchscreen phone

Traditionally, Mobiado has launched only candybar phones – but not anymore. The Canadian company has announced its first touchscreen handsets: the Mobiado Grand Touch and the Mobiado Grand Touch GCB. The Grand Touch has a case “precision CNC machined from solid aircraft aluminum”, while the Grand Touch GCB is made out of brass, and plated with gold. Other than that (and the resulting different colors), the devices are identical. Their features include: 4 inch display with 800 x 480 pixels and curved glass surface Quad-band GSM connectivity (850/900/1800/1900) Tri-band HSDPA connectvity (900/1700/2100) Wi-Fi GPS Accelerometer 3.5m headset jack 5MP camera with LED flash 512MB of RAM 1GHz processor 16GB of on-board memory Mobiado doesn’t mention the handsets’ OS in the press release announcing them. However, the company has confirmed to us via e-mail that the devices run Android 2.3 Gingerbread. This certainly makes them quite appealing – well, that’s if you afford to spend a few thousand dollars on only one phone. You can check out the handsets at Mobiado’s website. Update: it seems that under the expensive hood which bears the Mobiado brand there’s actually a Google Nexus S. But… does Google really allow this? Via Press...

Mobiado Aston Martin luxury phones coming soon. CPT002 transparent phone concept unveiled

In case you’ve missed Mobiado, we’re (sort of) happy to inform you that the Canadian company has big plans for this year, and some of them will be accomplished in collaboration with British sports cars maker Aston Martin. Yes, you’ve guessed it: Mobiado will make Aston Martin luxury phones. There are no details on the phones themselves, but we know that they should be available starting May this year “through a range of premium outlets.” Until then, Mobiado and Aston Martin have presented a concept phone called CPT002. The CPT002 would feature a “solid sapphire crystal, see-through capacitive touch screen”, and would be used “as a key to your Aston Martin vehicle.” Of course, the Mobiado Aston Martin CPT002 will probably never become a real device. Or at least not in the foreseeable future. Via Press release and Press release (PDF...

Mobiado’s Classic 712MG Mokume Gane phone rediscovers old Japanese traditon

Only one week after introducing the Classic 712 Stealth, Mobiado has now announced another new luxury phone, the Classic 712MG Mokume Gane. Meaning “wood-grain metal” in Japanese, Mokume Gane is a technique of “bonding mixed-metal” invented in Japan in the 17th century and initially used for sword fittings. The phone’s Mokume Gane frame includes a mix of nickel silver, copper and brass, which is “stacked and wrapped in steel foil”. Other materials used in the handset’s body: sapphire crystal, stainless steel, and 24k / 18k gold. Like all the other Mobiado phones, the Classic 712MG Mokume Gane is unlocked and features 3G, a 2.2 inch QVGA display, GPS, email, web browser, music player, and a 5MP camera. You can find out more about it at Mobiado’s website (the price is not unveiled,...

Mobiado Professional 105 Damascus: new steel-made luxury phone

Mobiado has announced yet another new luxury phone – the Professional 105 Damascus. The handset’s frame is “precision CNC machined from Damascus steel”, this giving every phone a “different and unique” look. Damascus steel, as Mobiado is happy to inform us, is “a technique of hot-forging steel, originally used in 1100 to 1700 AD to create sword blades renowned for their sharpness and strength” The phone’s buttons and screws are also made out of steel, while the front and back plates are made out of sapphire crystal. As for features, the Professional 105 Damascus comes with 3G (850 / 2100 MHz), 2 inch display, music player, Bluetooth, microUSB, 2MP camera, and 1GB of internal memory. Mobiado Classic 712EM luxury phone brings exotic wood into your pocket

One month after unveiling the Classic 712 ZAF in “dream colors”, Mobiado has announced a new luxury phone: the Classic 712 Executive Model (EM). The new handset is “the evolution” in Mobiado’s wood series, being made out of exotic wood, sapphire crystal and aluminum. The exotic wood pieces (which are “inlayed into an anodized aluminum frame and connected to a solid wood top, to create a dramatic flowing effect”) remind me of kitchen tables rather than of something rare or dramatic, but anyway. Like most Mobiado phones, the Classic 712EM features quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900) and tri-band WCDMA (2100/1900/900) connectivity, 2.2 inch QVGA display, built-in GPS, music player, email, web browser, and a 5MP camera with flash and video recording. The Mobiado Classic 712EM seems to be available now in four color versions (Ebony, Cocobolo, Burl Black and Burl White. All phones are unlocked and come for unannounced (but surely high) prices. You can find more details at Mobiado’s official...

Mobiado shows off CPT001 concept phone

If you think you’ve seen it all when it comes to industrial design in mobile phones, prepare to be wowed by Mobiado‘s latest concept phone, the Mobiado CPT001. This new phone concept, which the company also refers to as an “objet d’art”, blends modern-age communications technology with materials that were famously used during the renaissance period. On the inside, it can be to contain what any other mobile phone might have. The stuff necessary for it to function as a mobile phone. But on the outside, it’s a different story. It’s a very, very different story. Mobiado has put the sophistication and luxury that the CPT001 concept phone represents in words, saying: Mobiado is consistently guided by a philosophy of doing things differently, and this principle has now given rise to the CPT001 concept phone. Staying on the cutting edge of design required the freedom to push the limits of what a luxury phone can be. The CPT001 is made from one piece of solid marble with gold filled engraved letters and details. The touch screen is made from a single large piece of sapphire. The buttons and watch crown are made from solid gold, with a magnificent gold skeleton mechanical watch movement placed between the Call and End buttons. The company offers no clue as to when such a phone will come to the market. I can think of at least two things that will be sure, though: it will be quite heavy, as well as...
