Palm’s webOS installed and running on old Dell laptop

Old used laptops are usually paired with old operating systems like Windows XP or some GNU/Linux variant. But for those of you who want to try out something completely different, check out Palm’s webOS. No, I have not gone crazy or fallen victim to a typo of some sort. Palm’s mobile operating system on the Pre and Pixi has been found to be capable of running on an old Dell laptop. See the image below for some introductory proof. And it doesn’t take a genius to make this magic trick work, either. Apparently, it’s as easy as taking the webOS emulator for the PC (which is compatible with x86 hardware) and using its image to install webOS on a hard drive. The person responsible for installing webOS on the above pictured Dell laptop used the webOS image on an IDE hard drive. As you can imagine, webOS on the laptop works just like it does on Palm’s recent smartphones, but problems arise from the input options offered by the keyboard and non-touchscreen display. So even though installing the mobile OS on the laptop is somewhat easy, things can only get tricky when it comes to actual usage. Whether or not something good comes out of this hack remains to be seen. It may help you pass the time on a weekend, though. Via...

Palm Pixi available for free through Sprint’s web site

If you’ve been waiting for the longest time to get the Palm Pixi on the third largest network in the U.S., Sprint, well now you can. And not only can you purchase the webOS smartphone off Sprint’s web site quite easily, you can do it without paying for the phone at all because it’s being offered there for free. The catch should be no biggie, since it’s something that almost everyone who’s ever had a free phone handed to them should be familiar with by now. The phone comes with a 2-year contract, which as Sprint puts it, gives buyers a great $349 USD in savings instantly. Above is a screenshot of Sprint’s online order page showing the Palm Pixi’s current price — $0.00. Sprint is just awesome, eh? Via...

What is the “Plus” in Palm Pre and Pixi Plus? Specs Leaked

It looks like we found out the night before the big Palm CES event as to what the fuss is all about on the rumored Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pixi Plus. Everyone had been left scratching their heads for quite a while trying to figure out exactly what the term “Plus” could mean. PhoneArena got its hands on some leaked Verizon document gives away that tiny little detail. The doc shows the specs which include 16 GB internal memory on the Pre (double the storage space from the original Pre), while the Pixi Plus will come with 8 GB internal memory AND WiFi, a huge feature the Pixi has been lacking since its launch. Sadly, however, neither phone will be able to support video recording yet. Here’s the doc. Now we just wait until tomorrow to see exactly how right these docs are. At least we don’t have to wait too long to find out if the rumors were true. The WiFi and extra storage space are always nice, but please, Palm, tell us there’s something else in that “plus”! via...

Rumor: Palm Pixi Hits Sprint October 20

If you’re a fan of WebOS but just want a smaller option than the Pre, or perhaps you prefer a Centro-style (yet thinner) form factor, the Palm Pixi will be available sooner than you previously thought. Word on the street — Boy Genius’s street, that is — is that the Palm Pixi will actually be hitting Sprint corporate stores and Best Buys around the country on October 20. Which, if this is the case, is definitely in time for your Halloween phone needs. Or at least the holiday season needs in general. So if any of you put off the Palm Pre until the second-gen device, the Palm Pixi (complete with OS 1.2, of course) will be awaiting your purchase. We wonder how well the Pixi will do in comparison to the Pre. via Boy Genius...
